Search Engine Optimization Starts With The Competition

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Analyzing your competition is a good place to start when optimizing your web site for search engine placement. SEO or search engine optimization is about topping your competition. By looking first at web sites that rank high for your key word phrases you will have an understanding of the time and cost involved to have high rankings in the search engines. If you are going after a competitive keyword phrase the amount of time involved will dramatically increase.

When analyzing the competition, search for your keyword phrase or phrases in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Look at the top sites and especially look at the sites that rank high in all three of the major search engines. You now have a list of competitor web sites; these are your targets to pick off one by one.

Check your competitors` backlinks or links to them from other web sites; this is going to be the best indicator of how much effort you are going to have to put into your search engine optimization project. You can check backlinks in Google and MSN by typing link:www.yourdomain.com. In Yahoo you would type link:http://www.yourdomain.com. Yahoo also has a special command that will show you all the links to an entire web site. This can be done by typing linkdomain:www.yourdomain.com. Now you can see all the links to the home page and sub-pages in a web site. The linkdomain command is the most helpful when evaluating links. Be sure to check links in all three major search engines so you do not miss anything. Also check backlinks on competitors sub-pages. You will not need as many deep links but this can make a big difference when trying to get a keyword to rank on a sub page.

When evaluating your competitors` links, keep in mind that this can be a link source for your web site. See if the web sites linking to your competitors accept web site link submissions. When submitting to other sites use your keyword phrase for your anchor text when ever possible.

Using the Google toolbar can be helpful too when evaluating links. Google assigns each page a page rank score based on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being the highest. Do not solely look at a page`s page rank score; it is better that the page be on topic rather than an irrelevant topic and a high score.

Next look at the competitors` title tags; are they using keywords in the tag? Be sure to check the keywords tag and description tag – I always find good keywords this way. There are some great free SEO tools on the internet that will automate these processes. Just do a search for free SEO tools and you will have a lot of tools with different and unique features for your needs.

Links are very important but if you are smart you will not need as many to beat out the competition. Build your inbound links slow and steady, and from a variety of sources. Make sure to use your keyword phases in your anchor text and vary the text for some of the links. This will appear natural to the search engines and should help you to avoid over optimization or spam penalties. If you are trying to acquire one hundred inbound links to your web site, space your acquisitions out over a three month period or longer. One hundred backlinks appearing all at once looks very unnatural especially if you do not keep building backlinks at that rate. Make sure you have well written relevant content. When optimizing your web site stay with in all search engine guidelines. The guidelines will give you a good idea of what and what not to do for you web site to rank well in the search engines. You do not want all your hard work to go to waste because of an over aggressive tactic or simple mistake that is outside of the search engine guidelines.

How to kick start your business with SEO & SEM

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Who is this for?

If you are a webmaster who is about to start his/her first online business or web site, you probably know that it is not that easy to get high traffic to your site. In fact, nowadays it takes a lot more work to be successful online, than it had been some years ago. The main factor that influences your success is that most business or web site owner do not know anything (useful) about search engine optimization (SEO) and/or search engine marketing (SEM). These terms are wide-spread, however, a lot of people just know of it as a way to get ranked high in the search engines.

There are tons of webmasters and web site owners who would like to know more about SEO strategies in order to kick start their business. If you have enough funds to hire a SEO company to do the promotional work for you, you would probably not sift through the internet and find out more about SEO, unless you are eager to learn more and more. So this article is mainly for those who start out with SEO and want to know more about the strategies to not only rank high in the search engines, but also prosper and do well in satisfying visitors or prospects.

Why do I need SEO & SEM to rank high?

The question is why businesses and web sites do need to promote their web sites well these days, unlike some years ago, when everyone was about to submit to a few of the established directories and was seeing an increase in traffic through spreading the word. The answer is: A few things have changed. The search engines have developed very complex algorithms in order to find relevant web sites and separate them from the non-relevant web sites. These algorithms are quite complicated and not revealed to anybody outside of the search engines.

The problem is that, in order to reach high ranking and traffic, you need to prove your web site to be trustworthy and relevant for the world. Relevance can be reached through search engine optimization, whereas trustworthiness is reached through the marketing and promotion of your web site to other relevant and related web sites. There are theories about a so-called sandbox or trustbox that is used by Google, however, they have never been confirmed to be existing to 100%. This sandbox theory claims that every new web site is put in a box for a specified probation period. While in the box the site is not ranked well and does not receive a PageRank. The trustbox theory claims that the probation period is more likely to be defined by trusted and relevant back links.

Whether one of these theories is real or not, fact is that you need to optimize your business for the search engines and then promote it. The main thought is that you should try to gain as many one-way links as possible. One-way links, also referred to as inbound links, are link that are directed to your site without your site to be linking back to that site. In past the so-called reciprocal links have been wide-spread in order to build your linking and prove your trustworthiness and/or relevance. However, these days, one-way links are more than appreciated and worth it!

How to approach? How to gain one-way links and kick start my business now?

This is a very complex topic and it is impossible to tell you about any existing and proved strategy at once. Nevertheless there are some easy but time consuming ways to kick start your business or web site. Before everything can begin, however, you should first optimize your website. There are some resources on the internet that tell you about optimization etc.

After you are done with it, promote your web site to (free) web directories first. Web directories provide you with one-way links without the need to link back to them. Well, in fact there are a lot of directories that require reciprocal links back, but these are not the ones you should submit to. Submit to SEO friendly free web directories first, apart from the Open Directory Project/DMOZ. Then after you have done this exhausting work, write quality articles and spread them. Be active in forums. Publish a blog relating to your area and regularly write in it to attract readers and prospects. These are one of the main sources for getting your first traffic and back links, which raise your PageRank.

Now go on and find out about the variety of mistakes you can do while optimizing and promoting: Over Optimization.

How to Harness the Power of Web Directories: The Missing Link in Your SEO Strategy

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

So you want exposure on the Internet? Of course you do. You want to drive people to your site, because that`s the only way your online business can succeed. And the more eyes you can get to your page, the better off you are. It`s common sense.

You`ve probably already thought of Google, and rightfully so. It`s the top search engine, so you want to make sure you`re a part of it. You may have also done some search engine optimization, and tweaked your site in certain ways so that Google will index you better. That`s a good start, but it`s also where many people go wrong.

The search engine marketing community often discusses this faux pas: people become obsessed with ranking on Google, and forget that there`s so much more to the Internet, so many more places where you can be found. It`s back to common sense again: don`t put all your eggs in one basket. Here are some reasons why:

- People use multiple search engines.
According to Nielsen//NetRatings, 58% of the people who search on Google also use another search engine. The same is true for 70% of MSN searchers, and 71% of Yahoo searchers. If consumers are looking for information in several places, it only makes sense for you to be in as many of those places as you can.

- Google indexes your web directory listings.
Ironically, when you work to broaden your horizons beyond the Google universe, you`re also working to improve your chances of showing up on Google. That`s because when a major search engine indexes the Internet, it also indexes the content of other directories.

Here`s the best part: if you can get listed in a web directory that provides search-engine-friendly one-way-links (that is, links that connect directly to your URL), you are essentially acquiring a “vote” to your site, and therefore improving your site`s authority in the eyes of Google, Yahoo and other major engines.

There are thousands upon thousands of Internet directories where you can list your site. Some will charge for submission, and the price will vary, from as little a few dollars, to as much as hundreds. Some will accept your site right away, and others will need to review it, to ensure the integrity of their database.

Common sense applies again here: the goal is to get listed in as many directories as you can, so you get maximum exposure. But web directory submission can be very time consuming, so you have to be selective to maximize your productivity. Here are a few things you`ll want to keep in mind:
- If the price seems too high, it`s probably not worth it. If you have a little money to invest, it`s a good idea to get into some of the paid inclusion directories. Pick and choose from some of the mid-level ones, and try to diversify your presence by picking some foreign directories, as well as some local ones. Some directories also offer special inclusion, where you pay a premium to get listed quicker. It`s definitely worth it if you`re looking to improve your traffic as quickly as possible.
- Before submitting to any web directory, check to make sure the directory is not banned by Google. Here`s a handy site, where you can type in the URL of the web directory and find out if it`s banned right away: http://123promotion.co.uk/tools/googlebanned.php
- Be prepared before you start submitting. Write a few descriptions for your website in different lengths (50 words, 100 words, 200 words), so you can just copy and paste when you`re submitting. This is guaranteed to save you a lot of time.
- If you don`t want to spend a lot of time searching for, picking and choosing directories, start at this page, which provides a great list of the top search-engine-friendly directories on the web: http://www.eliteweb.cc/directory/internet/web_directories
- If you don`t have a lot of time to devote to this, don`t worry about doing it all in one shot. Bookmark the link above, and take a few minutes every day to do one or two directory submissions, until you make it through the list.

Good luck, and happy submitting.

How Lousy SEO Smothers Good Practices

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Online marketers may have the best of intentions with their natural search engine optimization programs. Yet, they drop the ball with their impatience and eagerness to try the latest tricks and fads.

For example, you may know that choosing the right keywords and blending them with the visible text is a critical step. Even if you do this well you may still squelch your effort by going overboard in other ways. Here are five areas where you should tread lightly with SEO:

1. Long Page Titles
Stick with one, two or three search terms with 70 or so characters as your cap. Don`t make the mistake of cramming in a ton of words here.

2. META Descriptions
Strive for 12-15 words. If you go over, it won`t hurt. You will counteract your other optimization efforts by creating a META description monstrosity loaded with too many keywords.

3. Image Alt Tags
Don`t have a field day with alt tags. Often, a web site has many graphics and each could feature an alt tag. Stay away from the temptation to keep repeating your keywords and search phrases in the image source code.

4. Link Title Attribute
Desperate for any edge they can get, some online marketers have discovered ways to pack too many keywords in the source code. Yes, you can identify a link (the words appear when you hover over the link), but what can you really expect to achieve by filling up the link title attribute tag?

5. Domain, Folder and Page Names
Yes, including a keyword in a domain, folder name and page name can help. But it can also look like spam to the search engines and leave the wrong impression on visitors. Do you really want a hideous URL with three hyphens in the domain name, several more in the folder name and three others in the page name?

Your best bet is to stick with the basics – effective page titles and META descriptions (and maybe a few keywords in the keyword META tag). Besides that, focus on good content with search terms spread throughout the page (with some keywords linked to related content on the site). Finally, support these efforts with a robust link building program (getting links to your site from quality web sites).

Slow down. Pace yourself. And be careful what you read in the forums and hear from your friends. Before you do anything off the normal SEO path, you need to be very confident about your choices and their implications.

If you go at a steady pace and test your rankings as you try proven techniques, you`ll increase your odds of success.

Link building Strategies for 2006

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

“off page” factors have become one of the important factors for search engine ranking. And link popularity is “off page” factor.

Link building is very pain staking process because it consumes lot of time and also see the results only gradually. During the past few years webmaster exchanged mails to other webmaster to gain inbound links to their website which is

commonly called “Link Exchange” during the year 2005 many link farms, link directories and building and selling link website and companies popped up just to carter this sector. Since search engines still value these links like MSN

which gives importance to anchor text links pointing to any website in their algorithm. But after some of the major update of Google in 2005 and especially the Jagger update which was done in 3 phrases over a period of 40 days made

webmasters and SEO experts to give a second through about reciprocal linking.

Reciprocal linking was a method to artificially increase the link popularity of the website and gain search engine ranking. However after Google Jagger 3 update webmaster and website promotion experts learned that their website was

dropped to a few hundreds of pages in the search engine results. What happened was Google discounted or gave no value to those kinds of links build artificially by webmaster to gain link popularity. Besides website which has high quality

inbound links replaced those ranking which was previously enjoyed by other websites. Inbound links doesn`t mean just links pointing to the website; it should be from authority website and should be seen as natural by search engine

spiders. Any kind of artificial method to gain inbound links will be identified by these spider bots and there will be a drop in those particular website ranking.

The important tips and techniques to be used in future link building for 2006 are as follows.

1) Reciprocal link – Before I go further I would like to tell you that reciprocal linking is not dead. For example if you run a website on pets supplies and linking to a dog grooming website it is definitely take in to consideration by search

engine, since it adds value and information for the visitor to these websites.

2) Directories links – A link from Dmoz and yahoo directory is still considered as gold by Google and eventually your website will be included in Google directory is you are listed in Dmoz. Directory submission is not bad idea but if you run

a website related to real estate and submitting to non related directory it is not given value and will be discounted. The quality of the link matters rather than number of links. So try to get links from your Niche areas and directories.

3) Be a Content provider:- This is pretty tough but worth the effort that means give people a reason to link to your website. The reasons could be if you provide information to relate to our niche area on your site. I mean unique content and

where webmaster can`t find these kinds of information and it will be useful to reader in your niche area. Create an article section in your own website, so definitely you will get requests from other webmasters to link to your site.

4) Think out of the box to get links: – Send testimonials for products and services which you have used and ask a link pointing to your website. Conduct interviews with professionals in your niche area.

5) Press release:- Submitting a press release related to new services, features or products which you are launching will have drastic effect to gain links and popularity to your website. Submitting press release is fast catching up with

webmasters. There are many publishers and subscribers looking for latest news and content. So by submitting a press release you gain a wide publicity.

6) Submitting articles.- This is a form of viral marketing or like a virus because you articles submitted to article banks and ezine publishers will be picked by hungry webmaster and publisher looking for free reprint content. Imagine this

article which i have written might be picked up in newsletters and online publishers which in turn gain me a free inbound link.

So the bottom line is try to gain maximum inbound links from authority sites and your niche related website. This will definitely make your link building for the year 2006 a better experience and see your website visibility and popularity gain

new heights.

SEO Stoopid!

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Why am I SEO Stoopid?
I`m SEO Stoopid because I didn`t properly take notice of what my stats could have told me.

If I would have done, I would have noticed something sooner and factoring that something into my response would very probably have saved me a goodly number of lost posters and art print sales.

My site, www.kruse.co.uk/, is about SEO. I`ve been doing it since 1996 or thereabouts and have clients of many years standing. Halfway through last year, I started adding posters pages to it. It`s restful and unoressured compared with a lot of SEO, plus I wanted to see how fast I could get unrelated pages indexed and where and with whom, plus unexpectedly I found that I enjoyed doing it, lots of reasons.

When the first two phases of Jagger hit, I was cool. It washed over my seo clients the way I expected it to (it had no effects at all), and it washed over my (by now only mostly) SEO site the way I expected it to (it had no effect at all there either).

Then came the third wave. Oh dear!

My site`s serps (not my clients` – they`re all fine) went into a decline that they still haven`t come out of. I was getting damp postcards from my serps telling me what depth they were reaching. They told me in one message they`d dived deeper than any known footballers. Imagine! If they ever come back up they`ll need time in a decompression chamber before they can surface again.

I decided that since I was tanking anyway no-one would be finding my poster pages from the engines and so now was the time to hive my poster pages off to their own site, something I`d been meaning to do for some time as a site is unlikely to do well for two such diverse subjects. I got myself a new domain for them too, www.here-be-posters.co.uk/ in anticipation of the day when I have more time and can settle them down on their own dedicated space – the demand I had for them shows that they deserve it and I`ll be attending to this in the new Year.

I put them in a little backwater personal hosting space I have with my Broadband ISP. I have a custom 404 on my main site and I adjusted it to make it plain to folk that I`d moved the posters to a new domain as they were swamping my SEO efforts.

Now I always kept a good eye on my stats but I`d failed to note that results from Google, these days, aren`t just from Google any more. They`re from Google Images too – and despite the fact that I`d tanked in Google.co etc for text seaarches, unknown to me as my old stats package didn`t make the distinction, my posters were still very very well ranked in Google Images. I only found this out by studying my Google Analytic stats, a service I`d only recently signed up to in anticipation of clients expecting me to keep them abreast of Search Engine and SEO events.

I checked out “Michael Sowa Prints”. I was in the 80`s in Google.com but to my amazement I was at positions 1 and 3 in Google Images. I checked out “Salvador Dali Prints” and “Escher-prints”. Same kind of deal, I was well off the main map and out in the boonies in the text-driven Googles but top 5 in Google Images. Go see, they`ll probably still be there even now.

So, what was I to do? All those potentially hard-to-get serps were going to waste as when people didn`t see the result they expected when they clicked through, just my 404 page (polite though it was) they just went somewhere else.

Hurriedly put all my pages back up again is what I did, and on my SEO site too, (www.kruse.co.uk/), thinking to catch what business I can from what`s left of the Christmas rush. I`ve left all of the links to the new site (www.here-be-posters.co.uk/) in place as they`ll get people hopping back and forth from each site to the other, hopefully without realising. All the posters and art prints, the wall tapestries too, will have to be moved over eventually and on a permanent basis. You can have a site about SEO or a site that uses SEO to sell posters, you can not, not for any length of time, have just the one site that does both.

Not the way Google are ordering the universe anyway.

I`ll change over slowly in January using individual 301 redirects and this time they really will be permanent.

For now I don`t believe it`ll matter as Google, according to their own stats via Google Sitemaps, have no info about www.here-be-posters.co.uk/ and given everything else they have on their plate just now I don`t suppose they`ll be indexing it all and handing out a content penalty before I`ve moved everything over permanently.

But look at the sales opportunity I very nearly missed, eh?

Moral of the story is, make sure your stats package is the best that it can be. I don`t think I`ll be using my old stats package too much from now on, but I`ll keep it on as it does have some individual visitor tracking capabilities that Google`s version of Urchin currently lacks. Reading your stats regularly will save you money and time in the long run.

But do make sure they`re as detailed as possible – you may miss important information if they aren`t! Don`t be an SEO Stoopid!

SEO Linking: 200 New, Good Directories

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Summary: Are article directories the new SEO link directories? As 1990s-era link directories fade into relative irrelevance, article directories offer new opportunities for one-way inbound links. There are currently about 200 of these directories, none of which charges a fee.

Article Directories: The New Web Link Directories?

We are witnessing a new explosion in web directories that are actually worth the investment in time to submit to them. No, not link directories–their time has passed for good. The new directories are article directories.

What Are Article Directories?

Article directories are sites such as http://isnare.com and http://goarticles.com, which aggregate large numbers of articles into massive, categorized databases. Most of them act as clearinghouses for reprint content, encouraging visitors to add the content to their own sites. The articles are screened for basic indicators of quality and relevance before being posted.

The articles each have an author`s resource box, an “about the author” paragraph at the end of the article. The directories allow authors to include a link, and often, multiple links, in the resource box.

I personally know of about 200 such directories that will accept articles on any topic–with a live link and without charging a fee. There are at least as many specialized directories that limit themselves to business-only articles, women`s issues, technology, etc. All you need is a single good page of well-written content–and if your site doesn`t have that already, you probably should give up your web ambitions right now.

Article Directories` Linking Advantages

* Anchor text. About two-thirds of the article directories allow for the author to select the anchor text of the link in the author`s resource box. This is the primary value of the links from the article directories. The article directory pages usually have PR 0; some have PR 1-3. Fortunately, anchor text is often a deciding factor in ranking for non-competitive search strings that make up as much as half or more of all web searches. These links may also help a site that already has competitive PageRank but is getting beaten in the SERPs for want of anchor text relevance.

* Relevant links. The links are at least as relevant as links from link directories. The page on which the link is located is categorized within the site according to topics such as automotive, technology, decorating, or sports. Since most of the directories use the article title as the webpage title, you can even assure that the title of the webpage with your link has your target keyword.

* Traffic. Click-throughs on the links in the author`s resource boxes bring traffic, particularly in the early days after the article is submitted.

* Reprints. Clearinghouse websites that offer articles for reprint pack the double advantage of a link on their site and a link on any site whose webmaster chooses to reprint the article. In reality, few articles get reprinted since the competition for reprints is fierce. Moreover, fewer than a dozen of the 200-odd article directories actually get many reprints. The market is dominated, as most web markets are, by the best established sites.

* Mindshare. A click-through from a traditional link is just another visitor. But someone who has read a page of content from your site and clicked through the author`s resource box link is generally a highly qualified visitor who has been partly sold on the value of your offering. Meanwhile, even readers who do not click-through have been exposed to your message. You can help shape the market, building awareness of your product or service.

In short, article directories offer just about everything the web link directories used to, and more.

How To Build up Traffic For Free, Without Spamming

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Why would you want a linking strategy for your site? The most important reason is to drive traffic to your site, which in turn would increase visitors that would either purchase from you, make your web site more popular, or reach a larger audience to inform for your cause. The second reason to develop a linking strategy for your site is to help increase your rankings in the search engine. With Google this is very important for achieving high web rankings, and I expect the other search engines to follow suit relatively soon.

There are many ways to develop a linking strategy where the links to your site will multiply without any effort from you. This is the most effective way to generate links to point to your site. In this article we will discuss how to do this, debunk myths, and how to do this without unintentionally harming your site`s status.

Debunking myths:

Linking software

I personally don`t approve of linking software that does the work for you. Why? Because the software does not do a good enough job where it can tell if the site it has the same theme or relative content that matches your site. Many errors slip through the process when this is done, that can cause damage to the reputation and rankings in the search engine. Also each site that you would like to link to you should have a decent PR ranking from Google to help your site`s rankings. (PR ranking is a method that Google uses to put a value on the web site) If you have too many web sites pointing to you with a poor PR ranking it could actually make your site drop in the rankings. And in addition sites with excellent PR rankings would help your rankings a great deal.

Linking farms and automated link exchanges

Linking farms and automated link exchanges are not recommended for the same reasons as the linking software. Poor quality links and potentially harmful to your site. In addition these two methods carry another danger. If the site that links to has been put onto a black list for spam, and your site points to that site your web site will automatically get black listed and your rankings will go down as well. That is why I prefer one way links to your site instead of reciprocal links. It may sound hard to do, but it isn`t and I will show you a way to do it below.

The more sites pointing to your site the better. Right?

Wrong! In the past search engines would rank you higher in the search engines by judging the value of your site to the number of links pointing to it. But because people have abused and try to cheat this system, the rules have changed. Now they actually penalize you for too many sites pointing to yours if they are deemed suspicious. For instance many other sites pointing to you with the same IP address (caused by you putting up mirror sites to build links), links that point to that do not have the same content as you (”once I saw a web design site having a reciprocal link with a lingerie site”), and links that have low PR rankings pointing to your site (in this case the more the merrier does not work).

“I`ve seen a site with only 10 links pointing to it (links from government sites) do better with searches than a site that had over 10,000 links pointing to it.”

Another thing to consider: Google has just bought rights to register domain names. So, here is a theory of mine that may show up later. Google may update their algorithm to check links to see if the domain name those links are registered under contain the same registration information. This way it could penalize sites that register a bunch of domain names to point to their site and try to cheat the system.

“The only time you would like a lot of links pointing to your site is if they are from respectable sites, have a high PR ranking, and have relative content.”

Who links to your site now?

An easy way to find this out is to type in link:www.yoursite.com into a search engine and you will receive a list of web sites currently pointing to you.

Are they quality links?

You can use Google toolbar located at their site to read the PR ranking, an add-on extension for Firefox, or visit a web site that will tell you the PR rankings of sites that you type in. If you type in page ranking tool in the search engines you`ll find plenty of resources for this.

Who links to your competitors that are high in the search engines?

Examine and study the links to and from your competitors web site to learn more. And request links from the same people for your site.

How do I build links pointing to my site?

These are a list of ways to build links to your site that are one way links instead of reciprocal links. I highly recommend these ways to build a solid link foundation:

1) Content and more content. Content will increase your rankings in the search engine and people are more likely to link to you if you have valuable content. One time I had a large college link to one of the articles at my site for a research paper. The college had a high PR ranking and the link is in their archives. (This is a way to have your links multiply without the effort)

2) Add a link to us page to your web site. Where you can give the visitors to your site to apply a text link or banner. I recommend a text link to your site that contains keywords for your site. For example, web development contractor would point to my site via hyperlink. (This is a way to have your links multiply without the effort)

3) Start a blog on your site that people can go to and bookmark for the latest information in a category that relates to your site. (This is a way to have your links multiply without the effort)

4) Offer a free helpful `how to` e-book to give away that has links inside of it that point to your site. (This is a way to have your links multiply without the effort)

5) Submit to online directories. Online directories usually have high PR rankings and get picked up by other directories and web sites to include on their sites. examples: http://www.rboffers.com/links

6) Write a testimonial for a site you like that has the same relative content as yours. Chances are that if you praise their site and sign it with a link (to your site) of who praised them they will post it on their site giving you a fr^ee one way link.

7) Create a free article directory asking people to submit articles to your site, and in exchange for posting their articles on your site have them post a link on their web site stating where their article can be found. (your site) I`ve seen people put a list of where there article can be found to impress the visitors on how popular they are. (This is a way to have your links multiply without the effort)

8) Lastly, and most importantly write articles yourself! When I wrote my first article I submitted it to 25 places. (places with higher traffic views) and the next day over 180 sites were pointing to my web site, because I had a nice keyword enriched link pointing to my site in the article. The next day the total was over 300. How do you find out if they are pointing to your site? Type in your article title in quotes into the search engines and then you`ll find out how many sites are posting your article on their site. (This is a way to have your links multiply without the effort)

One thing to do for sure is monitor your results. Who is driving the most traffic to me? Which ways of linking are producing multiplying links without any effort on my part? Which links are actually harmful to me? Do these links compliment my site? Do these things and I guarantee you that the links to your site will increase ten fold.

Website Optimization and Linking Tips, a Denver Web Design Company

Website Optimization and Linking Tips, a Denver Web Design Company

1. Titles & Meta-Tags

2. Site Content & Keywords

3. Site Structure

4. Landing Pages – Content and keyword rich.

5. Links Page – Why do we need it?

6. Why link to your site?

7. How to find links?

8. Good Links – Who links to us?

9. Bad Links – Who we link too.

1. Titles and Meta-Tags

Titles & Content are the most important part of Optimization. If you don`t have the keywords in the titles of your pages you won`t come up on the search engines. Having them in the content of your site isn`t enough.

Optimization: Manipulation of your site for the search engines through titles, meta-tags, content, site structure and the URL string.

Note: Type in any keyword on the search engines and all the listings are actually titles of web sites.

Meta-Tags aren`t as important as they use to be, but it doesn`t hurt to have them on your pages.

2. Site Content

Your site content should be an always changing, keyword enriched, body of information. A web site that has had the same information on it for 6 months will not keep very good rank on the engines.

3. Site Structure

It is important to have good site structure, so all the pages of your web site are indexed by the engines.

A. Every page on the site should be linked to the home page.

B. HTML links are the best and can be done so they compliment the design, or are even hidden.

C. Filename or the URL string should be simple and short with the file name reflecting the keywords targeted.

Example: webdesign.htm – is perfect for the web design keyword and would make a good landing page.

Overall Optimization: The keywords you are targeting should be used in the titles, file names, text links and overall page content through out the site.

4. Landing Pages – Content and Keyword rich

These are marketed pages designed for the search engines. They are not pages a person would navigate to by the home page. Each page is set up for individual marketed keywords, so if someone types in “Web Design” on a search engine, they would land on this page that is designed and optimized for that market. This is a very powerful direct marketing, with one click you get what you want.

5. Links Page – Why do we need it?

We need a links page in order to exchange links with other sites. This page will not be viewed by potential customers. This page is for search engines only. Without this page linking is very difficult. This page needs to be updated at any time and in real time.

A. No more than 50 links per page, so we will need multiple pages.

B. Break up the links into helpful categories.

C. Have the link exchange information on this page, so it is easy for other marketers to find.

6. Why Link to your site?

The web site that has the most/strongest links to it with the correct Anchor Text will be #1 on that search term.p>

Anchor Text: One website links to another and looks like this:

Colorado Graphics: Denver Web Design

The keywords are the Anchor Text and the whole thing is a link string.

7. How to find links?

A. Type this into Google/MSN/Yahoo (may vary)

site: coloradographics.com

This will show you all the web sites that link to SSA Global and from this we will add Cyberscience to the web sites that have linked to SSA Global

Note: Since achieveweb.com is # 1 on the keywords we know there links are good.

B. Type this into Google/MSN/Yahoo

“Graphic Design”, “add your url”

This will show you every site with these 2 keyword strings, and use this to find a site to exchange links with. Once we find a link candidate we research the look of the site, # of link`s they have and the placement of there site on the engines. We can replace “Business Intelligence” with other industry keywords.

8. Good Links – Who links to us?

All links to our site are good, from anyone. The sites we link too is the only way to hurt our placement. Here are the best links:

A. Sites with related content, but no competition.

B. Sites with a lot of links themselves.

C. Sites with good placement on the search engines or with a good Google Page Rank.

Google Rank: is how Google views our site based on information, traffic, links, updates to the site, and overall performance of the site. Our Google rank is 4/10. This is ok considering most web sites will exchange links with a rank of 4/10 or higher.

9. Bad Links – Who we link too.

There are 4 types of bad links we can exchange with.

A. P0rn0graph1c – Speaks for itself.

B. Gambling – Same

C. Spammed links sites – These are 1 pages sites with linking.

D. New sites with little or no links to it.

Link building Strategies for 2006

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

“off page” factors have become one of the important factors for search engine ranking. And link popularity is “off page” factor.

Link building is very pain staking process because it consumes lot of time and also see the results only gradually. During the past few years webmaster exchanged mails to other webmaster to gain inbound links to their website which is commonly called “Link Exchange” during the year 2005 many link farms, link directories and building and selling link website and companies popped up just to carter this sector. Since search engines still value these links like MSN which gives importance to anchor text links pointing to any website in their algorithm. But after some of the major update of Google in 2005 and especially the Jagger update which was done in 3 phrases over a period of 40 days made webmasters and SEO experts to give a second through about reciprocal linking.

Reciprocal linking was a method to artificially increase the link popularity of the website and gain search engine ranking. However after Google Jagger 3 update webmaster and website promotion experts learned that their website was dropped to a few hundreds of pages in the search engine results. What happened was Google discounted or gave no value to those kinds of links build artificially by webmaster to gain link popularity. Besides website which has high quality inbound links replaced those ranking which was previously enjoyed by other websites. Inbound links doesn`t mean just links pointing to the website; it should be from authority

website and should be seen as natural by search engine spiders.

Imagine this article which i have written might be picked up in newsletters and online publishers which in turn gain me a free inbound link.

So the bottom line is try to gain maximum inbound links from authority sites and your niche related website. This will definitely make your link building for the year 2006 a better experience and see your website visibility and popularity gain new heights.
