Know About Anxiety disorders and Their Symptoms

Monday, December 29th, 2008

There are many aspects of mental health and there are also many types of disorders under it. Depression, anxiety, panic, trauma are components of anxiety disorders. When worry and fear interfere with someone`s normal functioning, it`s an anxiety disorder. Some people can be more or less affected than others. These feelings can and do have a really profound affect on a person`s life, often seriously curtailing his or her ability to function normally in their personal, work or social life.

One of the most common symptoms of anxiety disorders is panic attacks, which are intense periods of fear or feeling down. Panic attacks can develop over a very short time frame and they can last up to 15 minutes.

Anxiety can quite easily turn into feelings of panic when the symptoms of anxiety become so acute that they are allowed to consume the individual, producing heightened feelings of loss of control. Symptoms simply seem to feed and increase the fear and in a very short time they can so easily escalate into feelings of abject panic!
A good example of this is hyperventilation, or too rapid breathing, that causes us to breathe in a shallow manner forcing us to exhale too much carbon dioxide

Anxiety affects people since this condition can upset the individual. When upset, the concentration and line of thinking of the person is affected since even for simple things, he will already feel worried.

In treating mental health anxiety disorders, one can talk to doctors to give a better grasp of his situation. Also, instructions may be done so that he can follow a routine he would have to do once he feels worried. The therapists and friends can also talk to the patients and make them talk about what he thinks about what his happening.

Above all, it is important to remember that you will not die because you experience a panic attack. In fact, it is the fear of fear which really drives and magnifies the experience. Just take the time to practise, remembering to focus on breathing deeply and slowly; learning to relax your muscles systematically, the whole experience will be over and you will be able to pick yourself up and go on. But there is a far better way to live your life than having to constantly manage symptoms. That would be a bit like living with an elephant in your living room – yes, you could perhaps learn to cope with it being there, but how much better it really would be if you simply evicted the elephant.

The truth is that there really is no reason why you or anyone you care about should continue to suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.

You see, anxiety and panic attacks are produced at the level of the subconscious mind – that repository and home of all feelings – because that part of the mind has the incorrect perception and belief that the individual is in real danger. Now, the subconscious mind simply cannot tell the difference between a real and an imagined event, and it is reacting as though the situation and thought that provoked the attack was indeed dangerous.

All About Bed Mites

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Bed mites are dust mites that make their homes in your mattress and bedding. You may not even realize that they exist until you develop an allergy or have an asthma attack, which is made worse by these mites. They are microscopic bugs that feed on the dead skin cells shed by humans and house pets. Since most of these dead skin cells come off as you move about in bed, this is where you will find most of them. They are not dangerous, as such, in that they do not cause diseases. They cause allergic reactions because of the feces droppings that they leave behind.

The mattress in your bed could contain tens of thousands or even millions of mites. Mites prefer the warm, moist environment that a bed provides for them. Some of the symptoms you may have that can be attributed to dust mites include:

- hay fever

- watery eyes

- runny nose

- itchy skin

- sneezing

- asthma or difficulty in breathing

- eczema in infants

These symptoms can be present at any time of the year since dust mites will live in the bedding all year long. They continue to breed, so the population of mites continues to grow. There are some times of the year when this problem is worse than others, such as during the winter months when you have the heat turned on and all the windows closed. During the summer months when there is more sunshine and you have the windows open, you may not encounter the symptoms to the same extent.

Some of the conditions inside the home and the bedroom that will provide the optimum environment for these mites include:

- poor air circulation and ventilation

- high temperatures

- high levels of humidity

- indoor air pollution

Dust mites are too small to be seen with the naked eye. You have no way of actually seeing them unless you use a very strong magnifying glass or microscope on your bedding or mattress. Adult females can lay up to 40 to 80 eggs in groups of four or five. The life cycle from egg to adult is about one month and the adult lives for about another three months. Thus you have the eggs, the feces and the dead insects inside your bed.

The most effective ways of controlling this mite population include covering your mattress with plastic coverings. This also includes covering the pillows, but you can choose to use pillows that have synthetic filling instead of feathers and down. You should change you bedding at least once every two weeks and wash it in hot water. The high temperature of the water will kill any dust mites that are present. Freezing the bedding that cannot withstand high water temperatures is also effective.

Vacuuming the carpet and rugs in the bedroom every few days is also important. If you do not have carpeting, when you sweep the floor with a regular broom you could be putting more dust mites into the air that will land on the bed. For this reason it is better to wash the floor with a damp mop that will take up all the mites.

Effective Control of Mites With Dust Mite Spray

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Everyone has dust mites in their beds, which can trigger allergic reactions because of the droppings these tiny insects leave behind. These insects are so tiny that you cannot see them with the naked eye. They do not bite and do not cause any diseases on their own. They thrive in the warm humid environment that a bed mattress provides as well as in carpeting, stuffed toys and in the cushions of the sofa. You can control the dust mite population in your home with regular cleaning and by using dust mite spray.

This product contains boron, which has proven effective in the control of insects in the home. It is a powder that you mix with water in a spray bottle. You spray your home and then repeat the task every four months. It will not harm fabrics and is clear and odourless so it won’t cause any allergic reactions to the residents of the home. You can spray the carpeting, the upholstery, stuffed toys as well as the mattresses and bedding.

If you feel that you really want to make sure you do have dust mites present in your home, you can use a kit that will detect the presence of these insects within ten minutes. These kits are sold individually and one kit will test one surface only. Just testing one mattress in your home may be more than you need to realize that this could be a thriving environment for millions of mites. Although you should wash your bedding in hot water at least once every two weeks and regularly clean and vacuum the floors, you can make this task easier when you use a spray for dust mites.

You can also use the solution of the spray in a carpet cleaner so that you not only kill the mites with the cleaning. The moisture you put into the carpets can lead to dust mites making their home there before it even dries, so you do give yourself additional protection by using the spray solution along with the cleaning.

The way in which this product works is that it coats the source of food for the mites. Mites feed on the dead skin cells of humans and the dander left behind by pets. When you eliminate the food source, then you eliminate the mites. If you perform a test on one surface and use this spray solution, you will see a dramatic decrease in the dust mite population if you retest the same surface after two weeks. After eight weeks, there will be no dust mites remaining.

One 8-ounce bag of the powder for the spray is sufficient for 200 square feet of carpeting. A two ound bag is enough to spray 800 square feet, but this will be reduced if you do use the solution in a carpet cleaner. You should use this product twice a year and when you start to spray your home with it, always start with the bedroom because this is where you will find the most dust mites.

How to Kill Dust Mites

Monday, December 29th, 2008

You may not realize it, but you do have dust mites in your home. This can lead to all kinds of allergies and medical problems, especially if a member of your family has asthma. Dusting the furniture on a regular basis is not enough on its own to get rid of these pests and you need to look at ways in which you can learn how to kill dust mites.

The bedroom is one area of the home that provides the optimum environment for dust mites to breed and thrive. You need to wash your bedclothes in very hot water on a regular basis at least every two weeks. The water should be at the hottest setting on the washing machine at least 130. If you have fabrics that cannot be washed in hot water, such as some comforters and bedspreads, place them in the freezer for one to two days. Both really hot and really cold temperatures will kill dust mites.

Another method you can use to get rid of dust mites is to replace the bedding with those made from synthetic materials. Instead of using pillows stuffed with feathers and down, use ones that have synthetic fillings. Instead of using woollen blankest, use nylon or cotton ones. The stuffed toys you have in the childrens bedrooms are also havens for dust mites and these need to be washed on a regular basis too. If you are afraid that you may ruin them by washing them in hot water, freeze them once in a while.

Since dust mites thrive in humid conditions, a dehumidifier in your home can help to reduce the humidity levels and so kill the dust mites that exist in the air. Humidity levels should be kept below 50% in order to be effective in this regard. You should also keep the thermostat set below 70 to help kill the mites.

While most people like to make their bed as soon as they rise in the morning, leaving the bed unmade with the sheets exposed to the air for a few hours will help kill the dust mites that live there. This allows the sheets to dry out and while it will not kill all the dust mites it will drastically reduce their numbers.

Carpets and rugs also contain dust mites that you can kill by vacuuming every few days. If it is possible you should vacuum every day. For hardwood and laminate flooring, using a damp mop will control the dust and get rid of the mites. Sweeping a floor scatters the dust throughout the air and this makes the mites airborn. Experts recommend that in order to effectively control the dust mite population in your home, you should remove all carpets.

The sofa is another location often overlooked when you try to kill all the dust mites. By vacuuming the cushions and pillows you will kill the dust mites. Air purifiers are also effective with the filters that remove the dust from the air. You should also replace the filters on your furnace at least every three months.

Brain Cancer – Symptoms of Brain Cancer

Monday, December 29th, 2008

However most types of cancers can be beaten, if you catch it up soon enough, and even if you don`t there are new treatments coming out by the minute everyday that will help you fight and successfully beat cancer. There are however some types of cancers that are more complex in nature than others, brain cancer is the one we`re speaking of and the one we will be focusing on.
Two types of known brain cancer exist, namely: Primary brain cancer (these generally initiate in the brain), Primary brain cancer almost never moves to any other part of the body, so death is brought on by uncontrollable tumor growth within the brain cavity. Then you get metastatic brain cancer or otherwise known as secondary brain cancer (this type of cancer originates in other parts of the body and get transported or should we say it migrates to the brain thus causing the person to circum to secondary brain cancer.

Types of brain cancer
As most other types of cancer, brain cancer is also classified as primary brain cancer and secondary brain cancer. Primary brain cancer is the one that originates from the brain itself i.e. that originates in the brain cells. Secondary brain cancers is the one that doesn’t originate from the brain cells but is instead passed on from another organ/ part of the body
Causes of brain cancer
As is the case with many other types of cancer, the causes of brain cancer is a big topic for researchers. However, certain genetic conditions and exposure of head to radiation (as received during radiotherapy as part of treatment of other conditions) are known to be causes of cancer. There are a number of other theories that keep coming up time and again, each suggesting different possible causes of brain tumor (one famous one is about mobile phones causing brain cancer). However, there really isn’t a very convincing theory about what causes brain cancer.

Symptoms of Brain Cancer
Brain tumors can damage vital neurological pathways and invade and compress brain tissue. Symptoms usually develop over time and their characteristics depend on the location and size of the tumor.
Cancers are typically painless at first. As they grow, the first symptom is often a mild discomfort, which may steadily worsen into increasingly severe pain as the cancer enlarges. The pain may result from the cancer compressing or eroding into nerves or other structures.
The symptoms are caused by the tumor pressing on or encroaching on other parts of your brain and keeping them from functioning normally.
A sign is also an indication that something is not right in the body. But signs are defined as things that can be seen by a doctor, nurse, or other health care professional. Fever, rapid breathing rate, and abnormal breathing sounds heard through a stethoscope may be signs of pneumonia.
As the skull is made of bone, there is a fixed amount of space for the brain to take up. The growing tumor increases the pressure inside this fixed space. This is called `raised intracranial pressure`.

Herbal treatment for Brain Cancer
If you suspect you have a brain tumor, see a physician immediately. A CAT scan or MRI of the head can usually confirm the presence of a tumor and pinpoint its location. If a tumor is found, the physician may take a CAT scan of the chest and abdomen to make sure the cancer has not affected other areas of the body. If the tumor is localized and is situated in an area where removal is possible (on the outer surface of the brain, for example), surgery may be performed. However, some tumors-particularly those located deep within the brain tissue-cannot be operated on. In these cases, radiation and chemotherapy will be used to destroy cancerous cells. (See “Conventional Medical Treatment” in the “Bladder Cancer” entry for more information on radiation and chemotherapy.)

What is Bladder Cancer

Monday, December 29th, 2008

The bladder is the organ in the body where urine is stored before it is expelled through urination. There are several different kinds of bladder cancer:
* Transitional cell carcinomas (cancer that begins in cells that normally make up the inner lining of the bladder) are the most common.
* Squamous cell carcinoma is cancer that begins in thin, flat cells.
* Adenocarcinoma is cancer that begins in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids.
The cells that cause squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma grow in the inner lining of the bladder and are caused by chronic irritation and inflammation.
Cancer that is in cells in the lining of the bladder is called superficial bladder cancer. Your doctor might call it carcinoma in situ. This kind of bladder cancer comes back many times, even after treatment. When the cancer returns, it is usually as another superficial cancer in the bladder.

Prevent Gall Bladder Cancer
Gall bladder cancer is a rare type of digestive disease that can develop to be a serious form of cancer. More women get afflicted than men. In most cases, gall bladder cancer is not detected until it has developed to an advanced state. Because of the difficulty in diagnosing gall bladder cancer until it has become advanced, the treatment options can lead to a disheartening prognosis. As such, it is better to prevent gall bladder cancer in the first place before it becomes too late. Prevention can be made with liver cleansing and diet changes.
Gall bladder cancer symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, yellowing of the eyes and skin, and unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite.
There are 4 stages to cancer of the gall bladder. These include:
Stage 1: Gall bladder cancer has an affect on the wall of the gall bladder.
Stage 2: The cancer has spread through the wall of the gall bladder, but has not spread to nearby lymph nodes or organs.
Stage 3: The cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes and organs, such as the stomach, liver, colon, or the small intestines.

Bladder Cancer Treatment
There are many different treatments available for people diagnosed with bladder cancer. Treatment depends mainly on the stage of cancer. A cancer caught early enough will require less dramatic measures than more advanced cancers. The most common treatment options are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. In certain cases, your doctor may combine two or more treatment options, most commonly combining surgery with chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Once bladder cancer has spread, the surgical treatment usually involves complete or partial bladder removal. A partial bladder removal (cystectomy) is often reserved for patients with less invasive types of bladder cancer (usually cancers that start in cells associated with frequent infections or irritations) that occur near the top of the bladder. A complete, or radical, cystectomy may also involve removal of nearby tissues. For men, a radical cystectomy often includes removal of the prostate, the lymph nodes near the hip and the semen conducting tubes. For a woman, a radical cystectomy also includes removing the reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes), part of the vagina and the urethra. If you do undergo surgery to remove your bladder cancer, you may require an opening for urine discharge (urostomy). Recent advances in surgical procedures are decreasing the number of people with urostomies.

Natural Cures for High Blood pressure, Causes of High Blood Pressure

Monday, December 29th, 2008

When the heart pumps blood into the arteries, the blood flows with a force pushing against the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure is the product of the flow of blood times the resistance in the blood vessels. High blood pressure is also called hypertension. What makes high blood pressure important is that initially it may cause no symptoms but can still cause serious long-term complications.

Hypertension is one of the main risk factors for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. In the United States, about 30% of adults have high blood pressure. Many people are not aware of the problem. Of those who are, less than one-third receive adequate treatment to control their blood pressure.

Believe it or not, there are natural high blood pressure cures that work – and work quickly. If you have been taking prescription medications to treat hypertension, you will want to read this. Too many people take these drugs, and they can be detrimental to your health.

The first way that you can control high low pressure is through the use of prescription medications. There are several available and they have proven to be effective. However, there are things you can do on your own to lower your blood pressure without having to rely on expensive and powerful medications.

The interesting point is that most people are not even aware that they have high blood pressure, unless they measure it. Two numbers measure the blood pressure of a person – where the number on top is the measure of systolic pressure that is the highest count reached every time the heart beats. The lower number is the measure of the diastolic pressure which is the lowest point reached when the heart relaxes in between two beats.

Herbs such as cayenne, terminalia arjuna (an Indian coronary vaso-dilative herb), commiphora mukul, withania somnifera, ginger, saffron (having a chemical called crocetin, which help to reduce blood pressure), mistletoe, kudzu (Pueraria lobata), valerian (Valeriana officinalis), hawthorn berries and tops, rauwolfia, horse chestnut and ginkgo biloba also serves to be very useful and effective natural health remedies for high blood pressure.

Hawthorn (also known as thorn-apple) is one of the most commonly used herbs for high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems and is a natural cure for these conditions. Some of the other herbs often used are cayenne pepper, coenzyme Q10, gotu kola and borage.

Apple cider vinegar has been known to be an effective natural remedy for hypertension. Because this type of vinegar (unpasteurized) is loaded with minerals that you need to normalize your pressure, a few tablespoons make a great remedy. You should take about 3 tablespoons a day. Dilute it with water if the taste is bothering you.

Meditation Techniques for Beginners, Types of Meditations

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Meditation is an intensely personal and spiritual experience. The purpose of each meditation technique is to channel awareness into a more positive direction by totally transforming one`s state of mind. The mediation is to turn inwards and to concentrate on the inner self.

There are many meditation techniques for beginners, I believe that guided meditation is the best for learning how to meditate. In order to keep your mind from racing and to focus your attention you can create a guided meditation using a simple recording device. The key is to speak slowly and clearly in a calm and relaxing voice. Begin by relaxing your body starting at your head, and moving down your scalp, face, neck, throat chest back, arms, hands, abdomen, pelvic girdle, buttocks, legs, feet toes. Talk gently and slowly and use the word relax many times.

When learning how to meditate the important thing is to start somewhere. You can always improve your meditation techniques once you’ve started but if you don’t apply any techniques on how to meditate then you’ve got nowhere.

Mindfulness meditation involves opening the attention to become aware of the continuously passing parade of sensations and feelings, images, thoughts, sounds, smells, and so forth without becoming involved in thinking about them. The meditator sits quietly and simply witnesses whatever goes through the mind, not reacting or becoming involved with thoughts, memories, worries, or images. This helps to gain a more calm, clear, and non-reactive state of mind.

Mantra meditation forms the heart of the Hindu faith and it`s effectiveness has also been proven by centuries of successful application. In mantra meditation, you pick a mantra that suits you and then repeat it mentally or out loud continuously. This technique, just like Zen Meditation, will help develop your concentration, mental focus and awareness.

Controlling Your Breath At no time during the practice of this technique should you make any effort to control the breath. Let it flow naturally. Gradually, you may notice that the pauses between the inhalation and exhalation are becoming longer. Enjoy these pauses, for they are a glimpse of the deep peace state of advanced meditation. As you grow very calm you may notice that the breath is becoming so shallow (or the pauses so prolonged) that it hardly seems necessary to breathe at all.

Taoist meditation methods have many points in common with Hindu and Buddhist systems, but the Taoist way is less abstract and far more down-to-earth than the contemplative traditions which evolved in India. The primary hallmark of Taoist meditation is the generation, transformation, and circulation of internal energy. Once the meditator has `achieved energy` (deh-chee), it can be applied to promoting health and longevity, nurturing the `spiritual embryo` of immortality, martial arts, healing, painting and poetry, sensual self-indulgence, or whatever else the adept wishes to do with it.

Prozac And Group Therapy For The HIV-Positive

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Major depression can be a problem for many, but it can be particularly hard-hitting for those who are found to be HIV-Positive. The fact is, those who are HIV-Positive are living difficult lives, with death being a problem that they have to live with at all times. Treatments for the problem do exist, with medication designed to stave off the effects having been developed – and research teams working on cures. That doesn’t help much when they’re attempting to work off the problems caused by their state, though. Prozac is most often prescribed for helping alleviate the depression that many HIV-Positive patients feel, but recent studies have shown that the drug works better when combined with group therapy.

The first study made to determine the effectiveness of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors like Prozac on those who are HIV-Positive, as opposed to simple psychotherapy, also checked on how the antidepressant acted with HIV medications. The drug was found to produce minimal side effects on the bodies of the HIV-Positive, and it also did not have any significant interactions with the HIV drugs that were used in the test. In simpler terms, as far as the research team could determine, Prozac was safe to use for those with HIV.

The results are expected to help establish better statistics for compliance by patients who are already under a multiple drug regimen. Major depressive episodes are among the most common behavioral and mood disorders to manifest among HIV patients, with an estimated 20% of them experiencing it at least once. The patients tend to suffer multiple medical complications that make their lives difficult, and many receive numerous potentially toxic medications over the course of their treatment. Even ordinary drugs could prove potentially fatal amidst the damaged immune systems of those with HIV.

The test was designed so that it would be random, double-blind, and placebo-controlled. The 47 HIV-positive men who participated were sent into weekly group therapy. The sample contained men who had recurrent major depression and had a recent episode lasting several months.
