But compared to its older sister, the landline phones and other older forms of communication, the cell phone has brought in a lot of benefits, which have largely gone unnoticed. Let’s give an ode to our lovely teeny-weeny phones and acknowledge some of the best traits of cell phone technology in our lives.

Escape from a boring conversation – Got stuck in a boring party and mindless conversation discussing global warming and new farming techniques. Grab your cell phone, play your ringtone, pretend to have gotten an important call, mutter “Excuse me, gotta go” and lo you are free.

Goodbye creditors – Is it a call from a friend who wants to borrow some money from you, or your credit card issuer asking you when you can pay back the dues? “Hello….Hello….i cannot hear you….the signal is poor here”….plunk. Press ‘End call’. Thank God cell phones suffer from poor signal at times, unlike landline phones.

Flaunt your cell phone – This is obviously something that you could not have done with your landline phones even if you wanted to. Make sure you download ringtones for your iPhone or blackberry. When surrounded by inquisitive colleagues or a in a party that you are trying to impress, ask your friend to give you a call. Flash your new gizmo in style. After all cell phones are the only things that men compare about who has got the smallest one.

Spy on your guy – Think your partner is seeing someone else? Many service providers offer cell phones family plans specifically for partners. Get one for you both and find out to whom your partner is making and receiving calls.

Exchange text messages in class – Planning a weekend pajama party or deciding on a baseball team in school. What are the boring Math and Physics lectures for, if not for exchanging text messages with friends in class rooms on important issues as these? Work life has a way of putting people in niches. Retirement gives us a way to climb out of those holes and go another direction. This is what my husband Phil and I discovered when we retired in our early 50s.

No longer stuck with who we had become over the years, and not yet ready to yield to being “seniors,” we decided to live our long-held dream of seeing the United States – not just a series of short trips here and there, not just a surface glance at a few important places, but a real, life-changing experience. Along the way, we found much more than we could ever have envisioned.

We decided on this course because we still had our good health and our adventuresome spirit. Now was the time to take off and see this great country as a start to this new phase of our lives. We wanted to do this before we became just as involved in our “new life” as we were in our old. Soon we would be too embroiled in a whole new set of commonplace activities – even if they were of our own choosing – to be able to live our dream trip.

We planned, we cajoled friends into helping us, we leased our house, we sold our cars and we kissed those precious grand-kiddies goodbye. Then we took off to spend a year just vagabonding around the lower 48 states. We had no reservations and virtually no itinerary other than to travel in each of the states, see every national park and have the time of our lives.

As we traveled along, we found our curiosity starting to creep out from someplace deep inside us, and we discovered that we really were turning into kids again. How freeing is it to decide what you are going to do each day with no interference from anyone else? People all along the way would say, “Oh, we’d love to do what you are doing, but what did you do about…” and the laundry list of questions would begin.

In the waning month of the trip, we were reminiscing about all we had learned, what a fabulous experience it had been, and how we had changed, both as individuals and as a couple. We kept thinking about all the people we had met who dreamed of doing the same thing, but hadn’t yet figured out how to make it happen. We wanted to help them live their dreams.

We discovered that there was no book or website that really addressed how to plan such an adventure. Of course hundreds of books exist that tell you what to see, but none on how to extricate yourself from your everyday lives and plan your own trip of a lifetime. We decided to write such a book, but there was one problem. Neither of us were writers, nor did we know anything about publishing.

With 78 million baby boomers reaching retirement, we knew we had a huge potential market just based on people we had talked with along the way. Our next step was learning the steps to writing and publishing a book.

We learned to write query letters to potential publishers, and worked with a major publisher for nearly a year. But we found ourselves right back at the beginning when the publisher decided not to publish the book.

Undaunted by the setback, we decided to learn about independent publishing. Our book, Live Your Road Trip Dream and its companion website, www.roadtripdream.com, were launched in 2004 under our company imprint, RLI Press.

The book has sold well from the beginning thanks to articles in such prestigious publications as The Boston Globe and The San Francisco Chronicle, websites including USA Today.com, ABCNews.com and many more. The travel editor for the Associated Press used us as sources for two different articles which appeared in hundreds of papers. We have spoken on radio and TV around the country and done live presentations to groups ranging from AAA to RV rallies to libraries and bookstores. We’ve taken our road trip expertise on the road!

Last year we were finalists in the ForeWord Magazine book of the Year competition in the travel category, and this year won the Benjamin Franklin Award for marketing excellence and innovation. Phil and I both have sales and marketing backgrounds, which have been invaluable to our success.

But a funny thing has happened along this new path. People are now asking us for help in making their book projects successful. We now are headed in a whole new direction: helping people with their own book journeys.

One of California`s new hot spots is Oceanside, a bedroom community for San Diego and Camp Pendleton that just happens to have one of the best beaches in the state.

The city also is proud of nearby Camp Pendleton, the massive Marine Corps training center and the only thing that keeps the Southern California coastline from being one big city. Without the 20 miles of shoreline set aside for Pendleton, the city no doubt would begin in Santa Monica and end in San Diego.

The old rap on Oceanside was that it was a military town and not the place to invest millions in your new beachfront home. All of that has changed as the tiny beach bungalows have given way to lavish new homes while the city has attracted businesses and resort infrastructure so inviting that 17 percent of visitors come from Europe. Hotel and resort-goers are finding many more selections in Oceanside, which has always had a large inventory of vacation rentals.

And, while you`re sure to see young members of the military enjoying those incredible beaches and Oceanside`s many other attributes, this is not your Grandpa`s “military town.” Today`s military is made up of bright, hard-working 20- and 30-somethings who chose to join up for all sorts of good reasons. Having these people around is a big plus, not a negative.

Oceanside also is close enough to San Diego – about 38 miles – to make it a viable base of operations for visitors who want to be a little ways out of the city congestion, but close enough to get in and visit SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and other San Diego attractions.

On our most recent visit to Oceanside, we stayed at the Wyndham Ocean Pier Resort, which opened in early 2008. With arguably the best location in the city – right across from the popular Oceanside Pier – the resort both sells and rents its units, although generally it`s easier to get waterfront units as an owner. The Wyndham has gorgeous views of the ocean and all of the beach activity, from bicylists to strollers, from power-walkers to picknickers. From our sixth-floor unit, the views of the beach and nearby Oceanside neighborhoods were spectacular.

Our two-bedroom unit at the Wyndham was decorated in cheerful vacation colors like aqua and lime green and beige and included three flat-screen televisions as well as a complete kitchen. Furniture was fun, easy-going and fit in with the holiday motif that was so apparent as soon as we walked in the door. But best of all were those views, and we enjoyed spending time at the table on our lanai reading the paper, sipping coffee and savoring a commanding view of all the activities surrounding California`s longest recreational pier.

On the weekend we visited, Oceanside made good on its reputation as a legendary surf town. A competition was under way where surfers were doing some amazing maneuvers right next to the pier. From the beach, atop a platform, several judges were studying every move and awarding points. Beach-goers and sun-worshippers watched the surfers attentively. Surfing`s in the DNA around here – for example, while most cities have summer baseball or soccer camps, Oceanside also has a Surf Camp offered by Oceanside Parks and Recreation.

Just a short jog up the beach is another popular recreation area – Oceanside Harbor. This is where local boaters keep their private craft and where the public can get out on the water in any of several different ways.
