Dobro Tunings – Tuning A Dobro For Maximum Musical Depth

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

The resonator guitar, or Dobro, like the electric guitar, is the result of early pioneers of the guitar looking for some way to make their instrument heard above the other instruments in a band. Using metal resonators did not catch on as amplification but the resonator guitar was embraced by slide guitar players for its expressive sound.

The basic advantages of using alternate tunings for Dobro playing are the availability of open string bass notes to accompany your melodies and the variety of combinations of chords you can make use of. Standard tuning is fine for the Dobro – you can still do alot with single note tunes – but why not look at it as a new instrument with new possibilities? You can decide which tuning to use based on the key of the song you are playing.

Bluegrass Dobro players quite often use G B D G B D – Open G tuning. There is a certain advantage for guitarists new to the Dobro in using this tuning in that the second, third and fourth strings are tuned the same as in standard tuning. This makes it a little easier to become comfortable with the new layout of the fretboard.

You cannot get minor chords using the Open G but you can find two notes of the minor triad. The second and third strings played open are two-thirds of your E minor chord – G and B. If you play the open second and third strings with the fourth string barred at the second fret, you will get the sound of the complete E minor chord.

You can also tune the Dobro to D G D G B D. This opens up the range of notes available to you in the lower range and is favored by Bluegrass guitar players. Do not forget that you can use other open tunings like Open E and Open D. If you would like to play blues music tune your Dobro to D B G G B D – gypsy tuning.

Hawaiian slack key is a little appreciated guitar style which also uses alternate and open tunings. Among the slack key tunings are D A D F# A C#, C G E G A E, Open C – C G C E G C, and Open F – C F C F A C. The key to Dobro playing is the sound and how you can bring it out in your own way by using these unusual tunings.

I should mention that you can use the capo on the Dobro, just the same as on the regular guitar. You should have no problem adjusting to the touch of the Dobro. If you are thinking of buying a resonator guitar with a pickup, just bear in mind that you may have some problems with feedback.

An Island Of Hidden Depth

Friday, December 12th, 2008

With its island setting, Mauritius has historically been the perfect stop for sailors – indeed it is believed to have been first discovered by Portuguese sailors as far back as 1507, however, it was Dutch sailors in 1598 who really took a shine to this wonderful island. The docking port itself was named ‘Grand Port’, whilst the island was christened ‘Prins Maurits’ after the famous Prince.

With them, the Dutch brought sugar cane plants and to this day they flourish and provide a valuable source of industry for Mauritius. But for tourists, the real draw of the sugar cane plantations is the L’Aventure du Sucre exhibition – situated within an ancient sugarmill and offering tastings of some special unrefined sugars, not to mention homemade sugary rum sampling too. It’s an example of how history can be brought back to life with a little stimulus – in the form of old sugar recipes and a bit of tropical rum to swill it down.

Mauritius is an island that seems to take a deep sense of pride in nurturing its origins. It aims to keep history alive by retaining old traditions and preserving as much of its natural surroundings as possible. In this way it is a relatively unspoilt island, which has also managed to conserve many rare types of bird and animal. The Mauritius Wildlife Fund is internationally recognised for their protection of such species as the Pink Pigeon, Green Gecko Phelsuma and the Aldabra giant tortoise. These mythical animals sound like they could belong to a fairy tale – and indeed there is something undeniably magical about this whole island.

With its sapphire-coloured Indian ocean, pure sandy beaches, flowering orchards and warm weather, it has all the elements of a dream holiday. For Mauritians, you can tell that their island is held very dearly and you feel almost privileged to be able to share it with them. And, with Mauritius holidays it is guaranteed to be a rich experience, and one that you are unlikely to forget in a hurry.

But even when you encounter a little hustle and bustle – such as the city of Port Louis – there is still a calming and intriguing atmosphere that is infused with yet more history. Port Louis has many preserved ancient buildings as well as beautiful colonial architecture – like the old theatre house, which sits aloft a sandy street – and all set against the backdrop of the dark green Moka mountain range.

Mauritius is a very visual island and each attraction you visit and experience will leave its own mark on your memory – allowing the visitor to see that it really is an entirely unique and unforgettable place to visit.

XBOX 360 vs. PS3: an in depth look

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Xbox 360, PS3, games, system, console, comparison, review

All gamers are awaiting the release of the Xbox 360 and the PS3. This article takes an in depth look at how the two systems compare.

Graphics:
Everyone has seen an Xbox and a PS2 in action and we are all waiting to see which of the two next generation consoles for the two systems will have the edge when it comes to graphics. We have all seen the screenshots of the games on the two systems but what about actual gameplay graphics. Despite the hot debate, when you look at the numbers the two systems use a different but equally effective method of delivering graphics processing power. The XBOX uses a custom ATI processor with 48 graphics pipelines and the PS2 has a custom NVIDA graphics processor with an estimated 24 pipelines. The numbers are misleading because the PS2 piplines are more powerful than the XBOX pipelines. In the end the two different graphics processors will deliver about the same amount of power, we can expect to see impressive results from both sides.

Games:
Both systems have several franchise titles such as Halo2 for the XBOX and Gran Tourismo for the PS2 that you will see in the next generation systems, but what other games can you expect to see. If you are a fan of genres such as role playing that are dominated by Japanese and other foreign developers such as Square, you should look forward to the PS3. There is no indication that the XBOX 360 is going to gain much more support from foreign developers and buyers than the original XBOX. An article on GameSpot.com reports that only two percent of Japanese gamers are interested in buying an XBOX 360, with sixty percent looking forward to the PS3 and eight percent to the Nintendo Revolution. Overall you can expect to see more games on the PS3 than the XBOX 360, reflecting the selection for the current generation systems. Only time will which console will have the quality of games which all of us are been expecting

Media Type:
Will the media storage type be a factor in the quality of the games? Since PS3 is owned by Sony and BLUray is Sony`s next high definition storage medium, the PS3 games will be stored on the BLUray discs which hold approximately 54 gigs. The Xbox 360 games will be stored on Double Layer DVDs which store 9 gigs. Obviously the BLUray discs can store a lot more data, but at the current stage of game development, any game developed will fit just as well on the 9 gig DVDs, so this is not a major factor but one that may come into play later on.

Processing Power:
How do the two systems compare when looking at brute processing power? The PS3 uses a Cell processor with a PowerPC-based core with seven synergistic processing units while the Xbox comes with a Custom IBM PowerPC CPU with three dual-threaded cores that can handle six total threads at a time. An important comparison to look at is the number of dot product calculations per second the systems can perform. The reason this number is important is because it is used extensively during gameplay in 3d math to calculate various things such as vector lengths, projections, transformations, and more. Both systems are clocked at 3.2 Ghz. The PS3 can handle 51-billion dot product operations per second and the Xbox can handle 33.6. There is a debate over which system has more brute processing power and these numbers can be confusing to the average person, but overall it seems that the PS3 has an edge over the Xbox when it comes to overall processing power.

Media Type:
Since PS3 is owned by Sony and BLUray is Sony`s next high definition storage medium, the PS3 games will be stored on the BLUray discs which hold approximately 54 gigs. The Xbox 360 games will be stored on Double Layer DVDs which store 9 gigs. Obviously the BLUray discs can store a lot more data, but at the current stage of game development, any game developed will fit just as well on the 9 gig DVDs, so this is not a major factor but one that may come into play later on.

Games:
When considering games, you have to look at the XBOX and the PS2. The XBOX is very popular in the US and has a few great franchise games such as Halo, but the PS2 has an international reach and several popular game franchises such as Gran Tourismo that the XBOX has yet to beat. The XBOX 360 will need to appeal to foreign game developers and consumers to compete with the PS3. Only time will which console will have the quality of games which all of us are been expecting

Controllers:
The controllers on the two systems retain the basic shape from the original systems with some modifications. The PS3 controller has the most dramatic change; it has a streamline shape that looks more like a stealth airplane than a game controller. The XBOX controller is basically the same shape as the previous system with a different color scheme. From the pictures released, it seems the XBOX controller will be more comfortable and natural to use. The PS3 controller looks like it would just slip out of your hand but we will not know how the controllers feel during actual gameplay until we get our hands on them.

The Storage Space of a Rechargeable Notebook Battery: In Depth

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Voltage and milliamp-hour are the two values used to rate notebook batteries. Volts (V) comprises of the period at which energy is drawn from the battery and Milliamp-hour (maH) constitutes the storage space of the battery. The maH rating represents the run time of the battery between charges. A battery with a high maH rating will have a greater run-time than that of a battery with a lesser maH rating.

Generally, batteries having different mAH can be used with the same notebook presuming the Voltage rating is the same, however when the chemistry make up of the battery is different (e.g switching from NiMh to LiIon) the voltage will tend to fluctuate. Otherwise the Voltage rating will need to be almost an exact match of the existing battery or as otherwise designated by the documentation. Using a battery with a different voltage configuration can seriously hurt the notebook. The maH value for the bulk of compatible/replacement batteries come higher than the original manufacturers batteries. This generally doesn`t damage your notebook, in fact, it simply means that these batteries in many cases have a higher run time and can last longer than original manufacturers` batteries.

Unfortunately the maH rating is not an exact measurement of the time between charges. By this I mean just because a laptop has a maH rating of 4.5 does not mean the laptop will last 4.5 hours between charges. maH is just a standardized value. The run-time of a laptop computer battery will change depending on a number of variables. It will depend on manufacturer of the laptop computer, the types of applications being used (autocad, word, ms access) the number of times a program is archived or saved, how frequently hardware such as usb ports, internal hard drives, and cds are accessed, the internal processor of the laptop, the age of the laptop, the amount of RAM and as previously mentioned the chemistry of any given battery (NiCAD, NiMH, LiIon).

Per one of the leading resellers of laptop batteries , the life of a rechargeable battery is somewhere between 500-800 charge cycles, this is roughly 1-3 years. When your laptop battery that previously would run for 2 hours between charges now only runs for 1 hour, it is time for a replacement battery. One of the largest and environmentally conscious laptop battery stores online is www.batteryvalues.com. They are customer oriented and have a large line of Dell, Hewlett Packard, Apple, and Compaq laptop batteries and AC Adapters.

Ken Morgan is an expert on rechargeable batteries, he is owner and webmaster of www.batteryvalues.com. He lives in Santa Cruz California with his beautiful wife and his beloved Australian Sheperd, Stella!

In Depth Look at HTC Diamond TouchFLO 3D

Friday, December 5th, 2008

TouchFLO 3D is one of the main feature of the HTC Diamond which is discussed separately because it has so much to offer. The original TouchFLO was not that impressive but it has now evolved to TouchFLO 3D. HTC began by masking the common applications offered by Windows Mobile.

TouchFLO 3d is purely graphical that displays eye-candy images. Browsing album covers, images, videos and contacts are made easy by flipping through it. The screen sports a music player like Cover Flow.
It also incorporates animations especially on the weather application. Some of these are animated lightning and when it is rainy, it displays a windshield wiper. These are just a few of the animations you are going to encounter. You are still yet to be wowed with the other features.
HTC Diamond is said to be really fun, beautiful, entertaining and promises impressive performance. But one of the main questions that need to be answered is its speed.
First and foremost the TouchFLO 3D covers this applications/task:

 The home screen displays a digital clock, call history, appointments, time, date and carrier.

 Speed dial where you can incorporate images or photos to specific contacts.

 Supports message applications such as Email, SMS and MMS.

 Also supports media applications such as music playback that is locally stored and image viewer.

 Opera Internet browser which already includes bookmarks which is very convenient. The HTC did not forget the weather and includes the weather application launcher that is icon-based.

HTC Diamond may look beautiful but it is not that fast. Sometimes it lags or does not respond immediately. For best performance there are places you should not swipe or drag because doing so can bring out lags for about 2 seconds. When swiping your finger across the icons it acts a bit jerky, slow and odd. But with HTC’s impressive work on its software and hardware graphics acceleration the HTC Diamond UI is much faster.

Developing Personal Depth

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Copyright 2005 Mark Myhre

Everyone seeks personal depth to one degree or another. Personal depth stands as *the* way to add richness and beauty to our lives.

Nobody wants to be considered a shallow person. Still, the concept of becoming a `deep` person turns many people off. We have this image of a deep person as someone who spends a little too much time stroking his beard and smoking his pipe, lost in thought way beyond us mere mortals.

They ponder too much. They`re smarter than us. They go to the opera -and actually know what the fat lady is singing about! They`re just not normal.

Fortunately, personal depth exists as something else altogether.

Achieving greater personal depth (and not coincidently, greater success at anything you pursue) involves taking specific actions. You can achieve greater personal depth starting today by working with the seven characteristics listed below.

1. Develop and use the generating energies of trust and value.

Trust: Even though you don`t have all the answers, you know you`ll get by. You`re `enough` and you know it. You can count on yourself. You can rely on your power, strength and talent. Whatever happens you know you can face it: you know you`ll make it. Even though it may not be perfect, you`ll handle the situation at hand `good enough`. That`s trust.

Value: You might not be highly visible in the world, but the role you play in life *is* highly valuable. You know you are valuable in your way – to yourself and to those who love you. Also, you recognize, respond and act upon your value.

2. Develop and use the sustaining energies of life such as discipline and ownership.

The discipline that`s self-imposed: You decide on something and then you *follow through*. You follow your own plan, your own rules – that`s discipline.

Ownership: Own your thoughts and feelings. Own your emotions. Own your failures – so you can change them. Own that you`re responsible. And own your successes – so you can keep them. Ownership gives you the `right` to change.

3. Continuously create new meaning, new destiny, new personality, and new self-image.

People with personal depth never settle for the way they are. They may be satisfied, but they always seek to become more. More meaning in their life. Higher destiny. Greater complexity of personality. And new self-image.

4. Develop and strengthen character.

Character: By knowing your ideals and your principles, and living by them…. by having ideas and opinions and standing by them…. That`s how you build character and thus increase your personal depth.

5. Continuous expansion of your power, strength, responsibility and creativity.

You look for ways to be more powerful; to act, to get involved in the world around you. You look for ways to take more responsibility from the most minute to the most magnificent. You know your strengths and look for ways to use them. You work on expanding your creativity. (Creativity is anything you do that inspires you or inspires others.) Just taking a walk can be creative!

6. Sustained actualization.

You`re in touch with your thoughts and feelings, and you`re not afraid to put them into action. You always think and feel. You`re aware of that thinking and feeling. And you act upon those thoughts and feelings.

7. Generating spirituality.

You don`t have to separate yourself from the mundane of life to experience your spirituality. Rather, you seek the spiritual *within* the material. Your spirituality eventually becomes your number one priority.

You come to realize everything you experience is a manifestation of your spirituality. There is no separation between the spiritual and the living of life – that`s the goal of the person seeking or having personal depth.

***

As you can see, personal depth is not something you check off on a to-do list. Let`s see… walk the dog, take out the trash, and oh yeah – achieve personal depth. No.

It`s an ongoing, never-ending, always-expanding endeavor. Basically it all comes down to becoming more of yourself.

There are no limits, and that`s the good news. You can always experience greater personal depth.

Busy Life – Affecting the Depth of Relations

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Life is full of uncertainty; no one can predict the incidents of someone`s life. All palmistry and astronomy is a different science. They are not lies, but very few people have access to right experts in those fields. The thing which matters is stability in relations and state of mental peace for every person.

Today`s human Being has become more materialistic than ever. They generally think about self, such kind of thinking is result of exhaustive capitalization of world. People are crazy for money and success in all endeavors of life. They are having very less time for relations, adults are busy in searching new horizons of career, elderly people are worried of doing more and more in the rest of life left with him, youngsters are busy enjoying the independence being provided. In brief, everyone is busy in looking for their own benefits. Relations are now a secondary thing for them, parents are not having time for their kids, and husband is busy in earning money for better life of his wife and kids, resulting less time for family.

This situation is very dangerous, if there will be no affection and charm in relation life will become useless. But very few people are ready to understand this truth, at a point in life they understand what is left behind in life, but till then it’s very late, and impossible to rollback. We can do everything for getting success in life, or earning money, or reaching new milestones in our career, but we cannot do anything to bring the time back.

People has to understand the value of relations, the need for parents, the availability for kids, time for spouse, and some time for themselves too. It’s a universal truth that everyone has been awarded with only 24 hours in a day, and we have to manage everything in these4 24 hours only, so being busy is just an excuse. But yes, career problems and being materialistic can be a real cause, because comfort and style has become a need for people, and they want both of them in life at any cost. For that one has to be materialistic, but in this rat race it’s unfair to forget the essence of life.

Yes, it’s our valued relations which are the essence of life. Be it relation between parents and kids, husband and wife, your friends or just your pets. Start giving proper value and priority to your relational then you will end up with and enriched experience in life.
