Auto vehicle giants Ford are to put a jaw dropping £1 billion in developing environmentally friendly cars based in the UK. The manufacturer has decided to put the money towards diesel and petrol engines as well as specialist bio fuels from vegetation and hybrid gas/electric cars.

One of the main ideas in the pipeline is a Ford Focus that can do seventy miles per gallon whilst actually reducing carbon dioxide emissions, making it not only green but also very economic and efficient. To back this up and make the idea become a reality Ford are also planning to increase the number of engineers in the UK.

In a recent interview the vice president of Ford Europe, Lewis Booth was excited about the future “We`re talking about a suite of technologies which will include hybrid cars, but it will include continued improvements in diesel engines, I think some substantial and significant improvements in petrol engines, weight reduction techniques, and some micro-hybrids as well,” before later adding that the money will also be used on other brands like Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover.

The press have seen this investment as a huge vote of confidence not only for Ford but also British hard work and ability during a difficult financial period where not every auto company have been able to build profit making vehicles in the UK.

There are currently over 35,000 people in the UK alone working for Ford this includes sites in Coventry in the Midlands, Gaydon in Warwickshire and Dunton in Essex.

Developed by Henry Ford the Model T entered production in 1908 and 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the first mass-produced car to be made on a production line. Ford aimed to develop a car affordable to the masses and through this goal the Model T changed the world and turned America into an industrial economy and mobile society. Buying a Ford Model T in 1908 cost half the price of its rivals and would help drive the change from horse to automobile. The Model T was produced until 1927 by which time more than 15 million models had been sold.

The Car

Early Ford Model T`s had no doors, the windscreen was braced with leather straps and the styling was typically formal and upright as is usual with cars of this era. There were changes made, the 1915 model for example has a single passenger side door but the driver`s side was covered by the spare wheel where the door would be. Also the back seat is set over the rear axle, allowing for plenty of leg room but no allowance made for carrying luggage.

What will your Money buy you

With a some sixteen million made there are plenty to choose from when Buying a Ford Model T. Prices today depend on the condition of the car and you can expect to pay around $5000 for a project car and over $10,000 for a car in good running order. Specialist companies can supply most if not all parts that maybe required for any restoration or small service that maybe required. In 1910 a Model T cost £220 and by 1919 the price had reduced to £170.
It`s important to remember that you`re buying a car with very little in the way of accessories with four wheels, a steering wheel, an engine, basic electrics and weather protection. Hard to believe however that leather seats and wood trim came as standard. In 1915 if you were lucky enough to have a car the basic equipment the Ford Model T came with was a luxury!

Driving Experience

If you`re planning on buying a Ford Model T then forget everything you`ve learned about driving. The controls look standard with three pedals, a handbrake and the steering column has two stalks. Despite the apparently normal set up, about the only thing that is vaguely normal is the brake pedal on the right. The other two pedals control the two-speed and reverse transmission. The middle pedal selects reverse gear while the left pedal – in conjunction with the handbrake-like lever – selects neutral, low or high gear. The left hand stalk on the steering column is the throttle with no return spring and the right-hand control manages the ignition timing. The hand lever has three positions: fully back the transmission is in neutral and the rear wheel brakes are on. In the middle position the brakes are off and the transmission is in neutral. The forward position gives a choice of low or high gear – press down on the left pedal for low gear, release it for top gear.

The Ford Model T travels along at about 20-30mph. It is strange experience at first as you are driving with your feet off the pedals. At these speeds the upright windscreen keeps the wind off and the exhaust acts as a heater for the drivers feet in winter conditions.

Worth Noting

When buying a Ford Model T it is worth remembering that it was designed and built for a massively different driving experience. The roads back then were dirt tracks at best, there was much less traffic on the roads, driving was an entirely new skill and motor mechanics were thin on the ground. The brakes were designed for stopping you at your destination, you needed plenty of ground clearance and your local blacksmith was your local mechanic. Given these details you must be careful when taking a journey as driving a Ford Model T in modern traffic is a challenge and it won`t dodge and weave through traffic like a modern car. The high driving position offers a good view and if you do hit anything the Model T is pretty solid.

In Summary

Owning a Ford Model T should give years of satisfaction as a hobby and few cars can match this experience considering the age of the vehicle.

When someone is thinking about buying a car, one of the things that they generally do is some research. They might like the way that a particular car looks, but that doesn`t mean that the car is really suited to them or that it will give them everything that they need and want. One of the most popular cars today is the Ford Fiesta 1.6 Zetec. This car is one that you instantly feel comfortable with. Some cars are expensive and pretentious and make you feel like you shouldn`t even be driving them unless you`re wearing a suit. These can be great cars, but they really aren`t for everyday – at least not for most people. The Ford Fiesta 1.6 Zetec, though, is the t-shirt and jeans of cars in the best kind of way. This particular Fiesta is going global, as well, because it`s coming to Asia and the United States by 2010, economy permitting. It`s got a friendly dash layout, knee airbags (which are great in a small car like this), and it`s generally just cute. It`s not that fast and you won`t break any land speed records with it, but it`s a great car for an inexpensive price, and that`s what a lot of people are looking for.

Younger people love cars like this because they are small and their parents can often afford to purchase them. The Fiesta is also very stylish, which earns it a lot of points with the younger generation and the older one alike. At a cost of just under thirteen-thousand Pounds this is a surprisingly inexpensive car for everything that it offers, and that`s going to make it a popular choice for a very long time to come. The 1.6 litre engine and top speed of 120mph won`t hurt anything, either. This is the seventh generation of the Ford Fiesta and it`s been the third most popular car in the UK for quite some time. With this newest generation, it`s possible that it could move up in the ranking. Whether it does or not, those who have a soft spot for Fiestas and those who just like little cars with a bigger car feel and some cute and stylish class will enjoy this great addition to the Fiesta name.

The Ford Motor Company has certainly been taking its lumps over the past few years, with 2008 likely to go down as one of the worst years in the company`s history. Sales are down, consumer credit is tight, and fluctuating gas prices has wreaked havoc on an already strained industry.

Ford`s champion, the F-150 pickup truck, has seen its sales drop sharply as buyers avoid vehicles that consume copious amounts of gasoline in favor of smaller, lighter vehicles which squeeze out every drop of fuel possible. That shift has caught Ford off guard as their most fuel efficient cars can be found in Europe while its American operation leans toward heavier, more powerful vehicles.

Fortunately, fuel prices have dropped by more than 40% over this past summer`s highs, giving consumers real relief and allowing car buyers to consider larger vehicles once again. Certainly, a wholesale shift to bigger vehicles isn`t going to happen, but the balance appears to be righted, a move which can only help Ford.

Just in time for the next generation F-150`s release, the lower gas prices couldn`t have come soon enough. When Ford redesigned the F-150, they decided to go with a strictly V8 line up, figuring that the new base V8 would offer comparable fuel economy to the old V6 while giving consumers the power that they wanted. Unfortunately, that move has left Ford exposed as many buyers are shunning V8 power. As a result, Ford is hurrying the development of a new V6 and will soon make available a V8 diesel to supplement its truck series line up.

With the newest F Series, Ford has developed a special truck – the F-150 Raptor – a performance, off-road truck for enthusiasts. Ford shares the following about its latest specialty model:

Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) taps into growing off-road enthusiast market and builds on the solid foundation of the new Ford F-150 to deliver the ultimate off-road performance truck – the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

Industry-first internal bypass shocks by Fox Racing Shox help provide smooth ride; lower, wider design key to desert racing and off-road performance

The F-150 SVT Raptor launches with the proven 5.4-liter Triton V-8 with 310 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft of torque; a 6.2-liter V-8 engine will be available after launch

“Ford trucks have been a mainstay on the off-road racing scene for more that 20 years because of our long history of capability and durability,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president for Global Product Development. “With the F-150 SVT Raptor, we are delivering a true off-road performance truck with the proven ‘Built Ford Tough’ capability and durability that is at the core of every F-150 and the best in performance thanks to the team at SVT.”

“Like its fighter jet and dinosaur namesakes, the F-150 SVT Raptor is tough, fast, aggressive, and built with the off-road enthusiast in mind,” he added.

The F-150 SVT Raptor will be built along side the new F-150 at Ford’s Dearborn Truck Plant at the historic Rouge Center in Dearborn, Mich.

This year Ford are looking to change their appearance as a company. Gone are the plans for larger cars/SUVs as the market is slowly declining. In its place we will see a drive on smaller more environmentally friendly vehicles. The change is thought to be linked with petrol price increases and the general publics awareness of their global footprint.

Fords top sellers over previous years have been the Explorer sport and the F-150 Pickup. Sales have taken a swift nose-dive and the companies attention has turned to the Ford Focus. Freshly redesigned this at the start of this year the Ford Focus has enjoyed a large increase in sales, particularly in Canada where there has been a recent monthly increase by 18%.

Whilst not completely wiping the slate clean with the new design the Ford Focus 2008 has become a bit more minimalist. The 3 & 5 door hatchbacks are no longer, leaving the 2 door coupe and the 4 door sedan. Ford have large expectations for the new model and are hoping to revive the glory days of 1999 when the car won Car of the Year in North America and Canada. Since then the car has fallen behind such makes as Honda, Mazda and Corolla. Maybe 2008 is the year for a turnaround in fortune?

So what are the changes? The new Focus looks bolder with a stronger exterior look. The interior is comfortable, spacious and quiet with the seating and panel also being updated. An attractive blue lighting effect has also been added to the instrument cluster, window switches, door lock and steering wheel.

However the biggest and definitely most interesting change to the Focus is the Microsoft designed and totally Ford exclusive Sync System. This enables the driver to voice activate their phones, mp3 players, radio and steering wheel.

The car is lighter than previous models and comes with a 2 litre Duratec DOHC four cylinder engine. Efficiency has been improved with a modern air intake system combined with cooling system, giving you a bit more power for your money.

Out on the road the Focus is smooth whilst giving you a relaxed and quiet drive. Steering is receptive and the cars controls are all placed within close proximity to ensure a simple and easy drive.
