Buy Ford, buy green

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Auto vehicle giants Ford are to put a jaw dropping £1 billion in developing environmentally friendly cars based in the UK. The manufacturer has decided to put the money towards diesel and petrol engines as well as specialist bio fuels from vegetation and hybrid gas/electric cars.

One of the main ideas in the pipeline is a Ford Focus that can do seventy miles per gallon whilst actually reducing carbon dioxide emissions, making it not only green but also very economic and efficient. To back this up and make the idea become a reality Ford are also planning to increase the number of engineers in the UK.

In a recent interview the vice president of Ford Europe, Lewis Booth was excited about the future “We`re talking about a suite of technologies which will include hybrid cars, but it will include continued improvements in diesel engines, I think some substantial and significant improvements in petrol engines, weight reduction techniques, and some micro-hybrids as well,” before later adding that the money will also be used on other brands like Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover.

The press have seen this investment as a huge vote of confidence not only for Ford but also British hard work and ability during a difficult financial period where not every auto company have been able to build profit making vehicles in the UK.

There are currently over 35,000 people in the UK alone working for Ford this includes sites in Coventry in the Midlands, Gaydon in Warwickshire and Dunton in Essex.

Go Green with ID Card Printing

Friday, January 16th, 2009

There are a number of ways to keep the environment in mind when you are planning your ID supply and equipment purchases. A little research can turn up interesting details about advances in sustainability throughout this industry. We will start with a look at consumables for use with your existing card printer and finish up with a brief overview of what to look for when you are buying a new machine.

The easiest way to make earth friendly upgrades is by changing what type of card stock you purchase. 100% recycled PVC is available in a standard 30 mil thickness and can be used for any application you would normally use virgin PVC for. Purchasing this type of item supports the recycling industry and makes it more affordable for recyclers to continue to provide these products. An even more popular option is eco-friendly corn based material. The particular variety of corn used is not diverted from our food chain and manufacturing requires up to 50% less fossil fuel than standard PVC production. These biodegradable cards offer the same high quality printing surface you are accustomed to, so you don`t have to “settle for less” to reduce your environmental impact.

More Tips:

1. Look for clear badge holders manufactured from recycled PVC and lanyards woven from bamboo fiber or post-consumer PET for your accessories.

2. Organizations like Earth911 can help you find a recycler for your obsolete plastic ID products, so make a point of collecting any badges that are no longer needed so the materials can be sent to a reclamation facility. Remember to cut up any items that have identifying information on them.

3. Laminate or apply a topcoat to all your cards to increase their longevity.

Industry Leaders: When it comes to environmental commitment, there are a couple of companies that stand out from the rest.

Evolis offers the Tattoo Rewrite printers, which allow you to reuse materials over and over again by erasing and reprinting the thermo-sensitive surface of specially designed cards. Their Pebble units incorporate “ribbon saver” technology, which conserves monochrome ribbon by using the minimum length necessary for each print job. This European company complies with strict guidelines regarding the use of hazardous substances in its products (RoHS compliance). They are also up to speed with the related Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment directive (WEEE) for managing the safe disposal of used electronic devices. Evolis boasts solar energy and rainwater harvesting at its headquarters and daily selective waste sorting in both manufacturing and administrative departments.

Zebra (formerly Eltron) practices full disclosure with its 12 page Corporate Product Material Content Policy. End users will be glad to know that they can check to see the full list of hazardous substances excluded from use in the manufacturing process. Zebra holds suppliers of parts and raw materials to the same exacting standards in an effort to keep their supply chain free of pollutants such as ozone depleting substances and heavy metals. Packaging materials from this company are also marked with appropriate recycling symbols to make it easy for you to keep up the good work by reducing waste at your office. The corporation has its own recycling program in place to accept used Zebra cartridges at its Illinois facility if you are willing to pay the postage.

High Powered Green Laser Pointers

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Green laser pointers make an awesome gadget to impress your friends with. Now, I`m not talking about green laser pointers found in Radio Shack or your local electronics store. I`m referring to high powered green laser pointers with a visible green laser beam in dark conditions (at night, parties, etc…). Not only is the laser beam visible, it travels farther than your eyes can see! At higher power outputs, the laser can cut through electrical tape, melt dark plastics, and even light cigarettes!

Buying a green laser pointer can take some research. The most important thing you must know is the amount of power you need. This directly affects the price you pay and the usability of the laser. You have to ask yourself, “what am I buy this laser for?”.

If you are just looking for an everyday laser to conduct classes or presentations, stay with a lower powered green laser. That is, stay with something in the 5mW range. mW is the power of the laser pointer and stands for milli-watts (1/1000 of a watt). Most laser pointers are categorized by the amount of power it outputs. For green laser pointers, you will generally find them between 5mW – 500mW.

If you are looking for a visible beam green laser, purchase something between 20mW to 100mW. Of course, the more powerful your laser is, the brighter it is going to be. It`s really up to you as to how much money you want to spend. For a good idea of brightness, search for images on google or you can find numerous pictures on laser pointer forums. For most astronomers, something around 50mW is enough. However, if you are looking to outshine your astronomer buddies, go with something more powerful. Remember, more power means more brightness. This does not mean, however, that these two are directly correlated. If you double the power, you will NOT get double the brightness. It will only be slightly brighter.

Now, I`ve mentioned burning green lasers in the first paragraph. What power do you need for that? Burning green lasers begin at around 100mW and again, the more power you have, the better. When you get into the very powerful green laser pointers in the 500mW range, they will cost you an arm and a leg. 100mW will do the trick but something in the 300mW range would be best. The question is, how deep are your pockets?

You should have a good idea about what type of laser you should buy. Remember to choose a reputable company as green lasers are quite fragile and they tend to break easily. You want to buy from a company that is reliable. I`m not going to recommend any laser companies in this article. You can ask for advice on www.laserpointerforums.com or any other laser forums out there. Good luck!

About the author:

High powered green laser pointers have been a hobby of mine for nearly 5 years now. I remember buying my first laser online and being amazed. Good luck on your search and I will come up with more articles to help you along the way.

If you are looking for information about lasers and how lasers work, I`ve been working on this guide for nearly 2 months now. There is some very good information on the physics of lasers. It`s another way for me to share with the world my knowledge on lasers! Best Regards, Emanuel Rodriguez.

Go Green with Digital Printing in New York

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Go Green, Use Green, 100 percent Organic, or Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle are common catchphrases you see in bold prints and commonly hear from environmentally friendly groups in New York City. Despite being the most urbanized city in the U.S., New York has eco-friendly groups that absolutely uphold the convictions and idealisms that they promote. In fact, the principle they are endorsing is not their own responsibility, but each and every one’s duty to protect our natural resources. Everyone and everything is encouraged to go green, including the printing industry. The revolutionary transition to the computer age has likewise made a similar shift in how printing gets done—prints made by the traditional offset printing press versus new digital printing technology.

Paving the Way for “Green” Digital Printing

Information technology brought us significant changes in almost all aspects of our lives, including printing services that paved the way for the development of digital printing. Environmental awareness has caused all of us to find ways to have less of an impact on the environment. Digital printing compared to traditional printing is a much less wasteful print process. While it does not totally eliminate the need for traditional printing presses, digital printing provides a cost effective alternative which is more environmentally friendly for businesses today. Digital printing offers high quality, fast turnaround printing for booklets, postcards, brochures, catalogs, or business cards with much less impact to the environment. In the past we have all been guilty of overlooking the consequences of the choices we make in our daily lives, but in the long run we must make more “green” choices. Digital printing is a more “green” alternative to other forms of printing and a good place to start in our quest to make more “green” choices.

Win-win Solution

Digital printing employs processes that involve more eco-friendly operations. Less waste is produced and recycled materials are used thus leading to minimal or no harm at all to the environment. It also encompasses the use of inks that do not utilize highly volatile organic compounds, which are the primary cause of air pollution as the compounds easily evaporate at room temperature. With the use of environment-friendly print processes, less air emissions are processed and there is less material consumed. It is a win-win situation with digital printing. Printing costs and wastage are reduced and at the same time elicit a positive impact to our environment. So go green with digital printing in New York. It will help conserve and preserve resources, and the Earth in entirety.

Go Green Act

Environmentally friendly groups in New York embrace the environmental responsibility that the digital printing has introduced to the printing industry. The onset of digital printing displays the social awareness and consciousness they have undertaken to avoid the detrimental effects of pollution and depletion of natural resources. Here is why digital printing is a go green act.

 The digital print process does not require the manufacture of a printing plate.
 The ink utilized in go green printers do not utilize highly volatile organic compounds that may cause birth defects and cancer.
 It uses recycled paper or post consumer waste products that saves landfill space and reduces energy and water usage in the paper manufacturing process.

Influence Graphics is the best digital printing shop in New York that promotes environment-friendly products. Printing jobs are done with less waste and less damage to the environment because Influence Graphics is a totally digital print shop.

At Influence Graphics, you are assured of digital printing services that consider go green and eco-friendly printers. It believes in reducing, reusing and recycling.

Green Friendly Holidays For 2009

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Sugar white sand beaches and azure waters are conjured up by many when they consider a holiday on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria.

And the picture would be right, Gran Canaria is paradise for those who love their beach holidays.

However, there is more to Gran Canaria than beaches – it`s a perfect destination for those who enjoy nature and a natural environment.

The island is rich in natural resources and its vast terrain tantalizes eco-adventurers of all types. The island has been designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO for this reason. Thanks to this special status, Gran Canaria will remain an ecological preserve for the rest of its days. It also ensures harmonious balance between nature and the interests of man, which still allows villa holidays in Gran Canaria for example.

Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands archipelago. Located 130 miles off the African coast, it has been a Spanish territory since the 15th century. The island bears a rich history dating back to 500 B.C. This is when it was first inhabited by the Canarios. Traces of their culture still remain throughout the Canary Islands.

The island has a full time population of about 800,000. However, tourism boosts the number closer to a million or more at any given time. Close to a half of the island`s regular residents live in the capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The rest of its residents are scattered throughout the island`s 21 municipalities and 1552 square kilometers.

While its beaches may be its top tourist draw, Gran Canaria is also known for its breathtaking volcanoes. In fact, the island itself is of volcanic origin. Its numerous fissure vents make this fact evident to visitors and residents alike.

An aerial view reveals that volcanic craters or calderas dot the surface of the island. One of these is the Caldera de Bandama, dating back to 20 B.C. Though it is one of the island`s smaller ones, the caldera covers a staggering one kilometer and a depth of 200 meters. Originally a double cinder cone, the caldera formed later on. Caldera de los Marteles is another of the island`s astounding sites. This crater formed over 100,000 years ago and now appears as a lush, green circular field.

Additional ecological gems include the island`s 290 caves located in the Cenobio de Valeron. This preserve is actually a massive basaltic arch. Inside, early setters known as the Guanche excavated caves and cubicles. These excavations still stand after centuries of time. The caves, once a storage area for the Guanche, are now a major piece of Gran Canaria`s history. Cueva Pintada is another of the island`s famous caves. It may be the most important seat of Guanche history. Located in the town of Galdar, it was once the center for ancient rulers. Its spectacular paintings gave the cave its name. Because of erosion the cave was closed to the public several years ago. However, tourists can visit the cave virtually at the Cueva Pintada museum. They can also view artifacts recovered from inside the caves` many rooms.

Gran Canaria is a treasure trove of mountains, sand dunes and ancient monoliths. The terrain is diverse and offers opportunities for sightseeing by automobile, bicycle and foot. Its dozens of species of protected flora and fauna beckon nature-lovers of all types. Tourists looking for a unique eco-tourism experience won`t be disappointed with a Gran Canaria vacation!

More information about Gran Canaria can be found at travel site yourgrancanaria.net

For those looking for a bargain in these recessionary times the site has a number of cheap holiday in Gran Canaria deals while those booking independently can often find cheap flights to Gran Canaria

Go Green at Work

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

With everyone and everything going green, why not go green at work too? It`s not as hard as you may think. Just a few adjustments and your office is on its way to being green!

1. First, think about paper. Buy recycled paper and paper products. Not sure how to tell? Just look at the package and it will say if it`s recycled or not.

2. Instead of purchasing new furniture, try hunting for treasures at yard sales or resale shops. Or if you have time, just give your old stuff a face lift! Get creative.

3. When you leave the office for the day, instead of just turning everything off, try unplugging everything. It will save energy in the long run.

4. Try arranging your office so you won`t have to turn on any lights during the day. Have your desk next to a window so Mother Nature can provide the light!

5. Instead of printing office memos, try sending co-workers an email instead. That goes for employees manuals as well, if possible, have employees read the manuals online to keep from using paper.

6. Make a habit to recycle everything in your office. Keep a bin where other employees can pitch in as well. You can recycle everything, including fax paper, envelopes and junk mail. You can even recycle your computers and office equipment. Check your local schools and colleges; they may be able to use them in the classroom.

7. When possible, try getting to work by using public transportation, carpooling or riding a bicycle or scooter. Walk if you live close enough, not only are you helping the environment, but you are getting healthy!

8. When you clean the office, be sure to use nontoxic cleaning products and brighten up your office with plants. Not only are they pretty, but they actually absorb indoor toxins!

9. If you have a kitchen area at the office, bring your own dishes and reusable containers and silverware. Try to avoid plastic cups and Styrofoam products. Try to encourage other employees to do the same.

10. Use Green marketing tools. Let your customers, and the public know that your company is environmentally friendly. It will enhance your company`s image.

11. Replace your light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs. Not only are they good for the environment, they last much longer.

12. If your office receives newsletters or magazines, find out if you can receive them online instead of through the mail. When you are done reading them, just delete them instead of tossing them into the waste basket!

13. Try to keep your office at a steady temperature. In the winter, instead of turning up the heat, try wearing warmer clothes.

And last but not least, who says you have to have an electric pencil sharpener? Buy the old timer type, you know, the ones that require a twist of the wrist to sharpen. That goes for staplers too. With just a few adjustments, you can make a difference in the workplace and the world!
