Are you an October, November, December or January bride?

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Winter months are a great time of year to get married. The nights are drawing in and everywhere starts to feel really cosy.

October brides can still get away with light and often strapless dresses as October days can still be quite warm. Equally, if you marry before the end of the month, you will still officially be in the ‘summer’! If it gets cool in the evening you could wear a light stole or pashmina to keep yourself cosy. In terms of colours, you may be inspired by Autumnal tones of orange, golds and browns. Aubergine and purple colours also look fantastic at this time of year. Although most Octobers are warm, watch out for the odd rain shower; invest in a cute bridal umbrella just in case!

November brides are guaranteed to be fiery ladies and there is no excuse for not ending your evening celebrations with a fabulous fireworks display. Depending on the time of day you are marrying, the air is much cooler in November and it really starts to feel quite wintry. Therefore, best to go for a warmer bridal gown, or one that at least has a matching bolero or shrug that you can take off indoors. Unless you are blessed with naturally dark toned skin, skin can look paler and wintry by the time November comes as holiday tans have long gone. On this basis, keeping shoulders covered is no bad thing, especially in an unheated church! This time of year is generally associated with wintry nights and fireworks so play on this with your reception décor. Why not give guests sparklers and light your reception tables with pretty candles?

December brides will always have a fabulous wedding as the promise of Christmas is just around the corner. Touches of deep red are bound to make an appearance on bridesmaid gowns, floral arrangements and table décor. There is a great deal of choice when it comes to winter gowns; check out the bridal stores for sumptuous rich and heavy fabrics. You will feel every inch the Christmas princess in an opulent winter gown. Some brides even go for velvet cloaks to travel in and out of the church and reception venue. This may sound like a corny idea, but if you pick one in a deep red, you will look nothing short of sensational! Why not give Christmas crackers to wedding guests and have mini decorated Christmas trees on reception tables?

January brides are full of excitement as are their guests. January can often be a flat time of the year and by having a wonderful wedding to celebrate, this really lifts the mood. The only downside is that you can’t afford to indulge too much over the Christmas period otherwise you won’t get into your dress! Talking of dresses, a plush, rich fabric would be ideal. Anything goes in terms of bridesmaid colours although stay away from colours that are too spring-like as January is a bit early for lighter dresses. Plums, Reds, Golds, Deep Pinks, Orange or Sage Green would be far better choices for this time of year.

January River

Once having been the capital of Brazil, in 1959 Rio lost this status but is still one of the centers of the country – with the offices of the large corporations, the first airport in Latin America and, of course, its carnival!
The city is separated into two parts – the north and the south. The southern part is inhabited by the rich white people. White, beautiful building rise above the golden beaches… It`s separated from the north by the hills Tijuca and Pedra-Branka. The north is populated, as you probably guess, by poor black people. There are no Chinatown, no little Italy in the city.
The event, Rio-de-Janeiro is famous for is its annual Carnival, the most renowned Carnival in Brazil and, may be, in the whole world. The origin of the carnival lies in the ancient African and Portuguese traditions. The incomparable fusion of these two traditions led to the birth of the Brazilian Carnival. In the beginning of the XX century the first samba schools appeared and in 1916 the first samba was created especially for the carnival.
Nowadays Rio Carnival is the most impressive and the best-organized carnival in Brazil. The 100-thousand enchanted crowd watch the parade of the samba schools. Each school devotes its performance to one theme – politics, nature, sport, art, music – all the themes should be Brazilian. The school creates its own song, costumes and choreography. The rehearsals began several months before the carnival. Rio Carnival – beautiful carts, a lot of musicians, bright costumes and the harmony of music and dance.
Beside samba schools the groups united by the district or theme, or something else take part in the Carnival.
The Carnival begins with the performance of 10 best schools, then come different groups. Some of the groups perform in suburbs. The category of the school can be decreased depending of the performance results. The procession begins on Sunday at 19.00 with the performance of the first-category schools. At first you see the name of the school, then come the members of the schools and the celebrities in the carnival costumes, after that – the thousands of dancers and the hundreds of the museums.
Carts are decorated with plumes; in carts there are VIP-persons and 8 allegories statues or big puppets. The height must be less then 10 meters. Nearby dance the so-called passistas, elite dancers almost without clothes. The procession stretches up to half a kilometer. The last school finishes its performance by 5 or 6 o`clock in the morning.
Rio is very famous for its beaches too. They are very different from each other.
Flamengo is situated in the Guanabara gulf and isn`t very clean.
Botafogo is dirty too and is not often visited.
Urca – nice, pleasant beach, especially in the morning.
Leme, Copacabana – notorious names, three kilometers of paradise. The only disadvantage is strong stream.
Arpoador – the utmost point of Copacabana. Swimming here is a risk. Big waves, a challenge for the surfers.
Ipanema, Leblon look like Copacabana. Popular place among well-to-do people.
Pepino Sao Conrado – big, picturesque beach. Good for surfing.
Barra da Tijuca – located near favelas (ghettos). Nothing to add.
Recreo dos Bandeirantes – surfer`s beach separated from the city by the rock.
Grumari – one of the most beautiful beaches.

Malta Adopts the Euro on January 1, 2008

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Following intensive preparations by the Maltese government as well as a very visible information campaign in Malta and Gozo, the island is set to introduce the Euro on January 1 after the European Union gave the island the final green light to adopt the single currency earlier this year.

Significant celebrations are being planned by the National Euro Changeover Committee and the Maltese Government on New Year’s Eve in Valletta with details expected to be revealed closer to the date.

On January 1, Malta will formally issue euro notes and coins at the rate of 0.4293 Maltese Lira to the Euro, which corresponds to the current central rate within the EU’s ERM II exchange rate mechanism.

Retailers and traders are already legally obliged to display prices in both Lm and Euro using the official rate of 0.42 93 Lira to the Euro.
If you are visiting Malta in January, it is good to keep in mind that throughout the month of January consumers can either pay in Euros or in Maltese Lira however the change will always be given back in Euros. As of February 1, 2008, consumers will only be allowed to pay in Euros as the Maltese currency would have been phased out by then.

The Euro notes and coins have already arrived amid tight security around the Central Bank of Malta in Valletta. The process has now started where commercial banks and other financial institutions are being adequately supplied so that they will be able to handle the changeover smoothly as of January 1, 2008.

The minting of the new Maltese euro coins was carried out at the Monnaie de Paris in Bordeaux, France. The process of minting 200 million pieces took place after test coins have been produced and consultations with the Central Bank of Malta on the correction of certain aspects of the minting process have been concluded.

As specified in the contract with the Monnaie de Paris, the Central Bank of Malta has received 196 million coins in eight denominations — 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c and €1 and €2. The value of these coins will be around €56 million, equivalent to around Lm24 million.

The Malta euro coins have three different national sides: Malta’s coat of arms, the eight-pointed Maltese cross and an image of the altar at the prehistoric temple of Mnajdra. Following suggestions by the EU Commission, the final designs had to be slightly retouched by Maltese artist Noel Galea Bason to make them conform to established guidelines.

The first starter packs with the new coins will be available to the public in the second week of December. However, they will only have a monetary value as from January 1, 2008.

Some of the best months in the Galapagos Islands: December, January & February

Friday, December 12th, 2008

It is one of the most amazing National Parks and Marine Reserve, where the best wildlife encounters happen. Galapagos islands so special in these months? Here are some expedition highlights for you to consider, and remember, they only happen at this time of the year

But, really what makes Galapagos islands so special in these months? Here are some expedition highlights for you to consider, and remember, they only happen at this time of the year:

December and January are some of the best transition months in Galapagos islands. The weather has changed, and the islands’ waters have warmed up, vegetation has started to become green, and wildlife is adapting to such changes. Land-depending species become quite active as their breeding starts, while that of the sea-depending species starts to slow down. Galapagos islands land birds, including Darwin`s finches, have started to reproduce. Watch how their courtship and nesting happens.

There are only four months of the year that can be called transitional months: December, January, April and May. These months are worth calling “Satisfaction guaranteed”.

Our rewarding itineraries include outstanding sites like Bartolomé, Genovesa, Santa Cruz, Española, Isabela, and Fernandina. Right here, and more so at this time of the year, snorkel next to the only tropical penguin on Earth, witness the amazing courtship of the great frigatebirds, see giant tortoises roaming the volcanic landscape of Galapagos islands, walk among blue-footed boobies, plunge next to young sea lions which are just learning to swim, and explore the shores where the most numerous colony of marine iguanas are found.

Enjoy the arrival of the warm waters from the north. Snorkel and swim next to penguins and sea lions with no need to freeze in the water. Tropical fishes abound too. December and January`s weather is quite remarkable, as most days are sunny, but not overwhelmingly hot. Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. It is all picture perfect.

Marine iguanas have just developed the most colorful mix of colors for a reptile: emerald green, red and black. Best sightings happen at Española, Santa Cruz, and Fernandina Islands. Observe how males establish ownership by acting territorial to other individuals. Land iguanas on Isabela Island have developed bright yellow colors, which next to light brown and reddish blotches, make these reptiles the most attractive of the arid zone. Their mating season has just started

Green sea turtles show the highest curiosity of the year to snorkelers. Best locations to look for this unique behavior includes Bartolomé and Fernandina Islands.

Isle of Wight Hotels are looking towards January for early bookings

Friday, December 12th, 2008

If you have a hotel on the Isle of Wight, you`re already looking toward January with the thought of early bookings. If you`re planning on staying in a hotel on the Isle of Wight, you might want to keep that in mind and be sure that you are booking far enough ahead of time to get what you want. It`s such a popular place for tourists, and even in what would be considered the off-season it`s incredibly busy, but it can be a relaxing and enjoyable place to get away for a few days or even a few weeks if you plan it right. One of the best ways to do that is to make sure that you know when you want to go and plan early. That way you`ll get your pick of hotels and you won`t have to worry about whether there will be somewhere safe and warm for you to lay your head at night. The area has a rich history, too, so there will always be something for you to do once you get there. Another thing you`ll want to take in is the culture of the area, because it is significant.

If you`re looking for something a little more active to do there are walking trails and a lot of great hiking trails as well. There are more footpaths than there are actual roads, and not having a car

can actually be a great thing on a place like the Isle of Wight. There is so much to do nearby that it`s not that necessary to drive around. You can have a wonderful and relaxing time no matter what you`re looking for, but just make sure that you book early to get the accommodations and the price that you really want.
