So You Want to Be a Rock `n` Roll Star

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

“Just get an electric guitar, then take some time and learn how to play” to be a rock `n` roll star, according to the 60s` super rock group the Byrds. But which guitar should you get? The band never addressed that question in their famous song “So You Want to Be a Rock `n` Roll Star”.

There are acoustic, electric, and even hybrid guitars available. There`s nothing wrong with starting out on an acoustic guitar even if you aspire to be an electric guitar player. Lot`s of people started off on acoustic because that`s what they had access to. The chords, notes, and tunings are the same.

If your goal is to focus on songwriting or just to learn a few songs for fun, an acoustic guitar may be ideal. Models with nylon strings, which are associated with classical and flamenco guitar, are easier on the fingers for some beginners, but steel stringed instruments can be more versatile.

Price is a factor for most purchasers…or their parents…so determining your budget is another consideration. Introductory acoustic guitars start around $100, including a nylon “gig bag” but spending another $100 or so provides a notable increase in sound quality and construction. As you go up the scale, price wise, you improve in materials, craftsmanship, and tonal quality.

I recommend playing several guitars or shopping with someone who can play, to find a tone that appeals to you. Spruce top guitars have long been preferred for their tonal quality. Spruce tends to produce a brighter, louder tone, while cedar is known for a warmer, mellower tone.

Look for a guitar with solid-top construction, in lieu of a laminated wood product. I also recommend looking for guitars with truss rods in the neck (this is a steel rod that can be used to correct warping that may occur over time), and geared tuners, as typical signs of quality craftsmanship.

Electric guitars require more components, making “jam packs” that include the guitar, amplifier, cord, headphones, instrumental DVD, guitar bag, and more for around $199, a good choice for budding electric guitar players.

Acoustic guitars that are specially made for amplification, sometimes called acoustic electrics, are designed more for performers than for beginners.

Used guitars can be a good bargain, particularly for performance-level instruments. Along side practical considerations, buying an instrument that excites you will increase your interest in playing.

10 Ways to Synch Your Book n Website for More Sales!

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Are you an author that wants to sell more books? Sure you are. We all are. I can say that with such confidence because if your message was important enough to be written; it is important enough to be read. Read by as many people as possible I might add.

In the new millennium the web must play an important role in your book`s marketing plan. Your website address should be included in as many places online and offline in your marketing materials as possible.

To develop your brand and increase your profits include your website address on all your printed media. Here are ten top ways to make sure your book and website are synched as precisely as your palm pilot and computer are:

1. Create a separate website address for your book.
Follow the lead of the best-selling authors in non-fiction publishing. Jack Canfield and Victor Hansen are not household names but their book series Chicken Soup is easily remembered.

Make your book site a direct response website. The more focused your book`s site is the better. It will be easier for your web visitors to locate and since there`s nothing to distract them they will buy faster. You can always link your book`s site to your concept site, if you have one with all your services, forum and general web community.

Additionally, make it easy to connect your website to your book. When you want to go to the Chicken Soup book series website, guess what you type into your browser`s web address box. You guessed it; simply type in Chicken Soup.

This principle is most effective with a concept title but it will work with any. Just make sure the web address is short and easy. Don`t try to use your whole title. Keep it simple and use the concept. Another good example is the Rich Dad Poor Dad series used www.richdad.com for their web address.

2. Give Away Sample Chapters.
One of the best ways to promote your book using your website is to give away 1-3 sample chapters or a mini e-course based on your book.

Fear of the unknown is one of the biggest impediments to sales. Even though the internet is growing leaps and bounds, there are still tons of people that are afraid to trust someone online. One of the best ways to get rid of that fear for the visitor is to offer them a free download of your sample chapters.

You can offer the free sample chapters in several formats. The most popular is Adobe PDF. Readers can download a free Acrobat Reader. Don`t forget your privacy statement promising not to share or sell your visitor`s email. Post your free sample offer in a prominent place and the privacy statement underneath.

3. Emphasize Testimonials.
Immediately below your free sample chapter, put lots of reader and authority testimonials. Hopefully you solicited pre-publication quotes from your readers as you were writing your book. If not, begin to gather testimonials from your readers. Showcase your best testimonials. Prospects want to know someone else has read and liked your book.

4. Focus on Relationship Marketing.
No one likes being sold. People want to know who they are buying from, especially since you are missing the face to face factor. Strive for a relationship with your readers instead of just a sale. Don`t be shy allow your personality to show. A client of mine was stressing over whether she should allow her picture to be posted on her website. Finally, she bit the bullet and her visitors rewarded her with increased traffic and sales.

The truth is people like to know there`s a person behind the website. Another client post a page of his favorite things on his site similar to what Oprah Winfrey does on her show—all with the purpose of connecting with his audience. While another post her family trips to personalize her site. Be real, be yourself and you`ll get more life long readers, customers and friends.

5. Offer Useful Content.
Have you begun writing articles in your field? If not, you should consider it. Writing articles (article marketing) is an easy way of getting free publicity. Publish a useful easy to read article in your field and you gain almost instant credibility. You may be saying I don`t have time to write articles in my field.

But wait, before you throw away this method of marketing. Have you considered transforming some of your book excerpts into short articles? It`s a simple way of making your book go the extra mile to help promote itself. Need some extra help getting your articles written? Click here for a popular resource of Earma`s “Putting Your Articles on the Speedway to Sales.”

Leveraging your profits by synching your book and website can be rewarding and profitable journey. Implement the tips above, synch your book to website and prosper!

Graphology at Home – Lesson 14h – the Letters N and O

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

N

The letter n and the capital N are overshadowed, in terms of importance, by the letter M. We usually find that the way the writer writes the beginning and the endstrokes of the n will be like that of the m. The m and n have the same form and therefore, the same meaning. The m is usually written in the form of an arcade, and likewise the n.

O

• Picture the letter `o` as a closed oval-at the top; it shows a person who is secretive. The degree of closedness of the oval letters reflects the degree of closedness in the person.
• When we use the expression “oval letter,” we mean a, o, the middle zones of g and d, or any other letter containing an oval shape.

• The knotted letter `o` indicates great secrecy. When there is more than one knot or when the oval is “double knotted,” the need for privacy is even more powerful. This form often appears in the handwriting of criminals, who obviously lock themselves in with these knots so (they feel) they will not be found out. When knotted ovals appear throughout the handwriting, we often find a paranoid personality. This person feels that somebody out there is against him and he must lock himself in for protection.

• Naturally, the more closed the ovals, the more introverted the individual. When one makes a knot or loop (especially double ones), it means that the letter was not closed tightly enough for the writer. By going over it, he convinces himself that he has plugged all the “leaks.”

• When the oval is open, the opposite of the closed oval is revealed. Its openness at the top indicates talkativeness, sincerity. The writer is not bottled up but is thoroughly extroverted.
• We often see reclined (leftward) writing with open ovals. Although reclined writing hints at withdrawal and reserve, there is no contradiction. When such a writer is approached, though by nature reserved, he is nonetheless able to respond. By contrast, the reclined writer with closed ovals is usually unable to come out of his shell at all.

• On the other hand, where the writing is inclined (rightward) but the ovals are closed, we see a person who is really warm, but when exposed to certain situations, in public or private, he closes up and does not know what to say. This is not because he is cold-he is merely subject to an unreasoning fear of the particular person or thing with which he is faced. When opened oval-shaped letters at the top appear with inclined writing, we often find the broad-minded individual. This writer is sincere, but it would be advisable not to tell him any important secrets; it is difficult for him to keep confidences. If there are some open and some closed ovals, then he probably can be trusted with a secret, since he knows how to hold his tongue when it`s important.

• Imagine the `o` that really looks like an e, but it`s not. If you try to copy it, you will see nothing unnecessary in the writing. It has a beginning stroke and an end stroke, the letter itself inside may pass for an o. Unlike the regular `o`, which is usually written in two motions-a counter-clockwise swoop, forming a complete circle, followed by an end stroke-this letter is written in a single motion. This writer has a way of avoiding extra effort.

• Consider the oval, which is open but looped. This writer sets traps. He is also very shrewd. When he opens his mouth (ovals reflect the mouth in shape) and speaks in a way that appears to be open and honest, he is trying to lure you into something. Once you agree, the trap (loops) snaps shut.

Beatles `n Darts

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Growing up in the `60s was quite an experience, fun and sometimes painful. Many things were a changin` and I guess we all had to adapt.
One thing that didn`t change was the fun and goofiness of youth.

The Beatles invaded the USA in the early sixties in a big, BIG way.
My sister and a few million other girls went positively goofy over The Beatles, I mean just nuts. They would go to concerts and scream and cry and scream some more. I saw it on TV!

My sister saw The Beatles at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and yes, she too screamed. Can you imagine a stadium full of girls. . . screaming? Sends chills up my spine!

At the time I was a guy of nine years old and none of this Beatles stuff made any sense AT ALL.
These girls were acting like these four dudes from England were the center of the universe or something.
Man, I thought > I < was the center of the universe. . .these girls were crazy!

I will admit though that I liked a lot of Beatles` music, too. I even got a Beatle wig and boots for Christmas. . .possibly in an attempt
at getting closer to the center of the universe. Undoubtedly, The Beatles were THE big thing of the sixties and I was there! My sister was even more there.

Darts.

I love the game of darts. Throwing a sharp object and seeing it stick into a board is fun. Getting ones aim down to a spot the size of a dime is difficult even for adults so we kids were happy just to hit the dartboard and. . .we put a lot of holes in the wall. . .oops.

For Christmas my sister got a Beatles album and a phonograph (record player) and my brother and I got a game of darts and some pocket knives and stuff (mostly sharp dangerous stuff).

Our family didn`t have a lot so three of us had to share a room. It was a long room about 12×18 feet. My sister`s bed was at the far end and my brother and I were at the other end.

Bob and I set up the dartboard on Libby`s bed and were having a great time throwing darts, and mostly hitting the dartboard.
Libby was in the other room but listening to one of her Beatles records on the record player which was by her bed.

The record ended so Libby said “stop throwing darts and let me change the record”. She even said it again

“do not throw the darts” (a little too bossy-like I thought).

So, I stopped throwing darts but she seemed to be taking a long time changing the record.

Bob was waiting for his turn to throw so I said “I can hit the dartboard. . .don`t worry”.

I wound up took careful aim and threw side-armed.

I want to pause and say something; throwing side armed is not as accurate as throwing overhand. . .any ball player will agree.

The dart went straight and true though. . .straight into my sisters left butt cheek!

It was strange, I was in shock, I saw my big green dart sticking out of her rear end and couldn`t believe it!

I think she was still holding the record when the dart hit home and at first she lifted her hands over her head still holding the record and let out a half-hearted. . .woo. When she looked down and saw the big green dart she let out a B movie style scream. It was a real honker. You`d have though it was the dart that ate New York, or something.

She yanked out the dart and ran downstairs yelling “I`m telling Dad, I`m telling Dad”. . . twice . . .for effect.

Bob, being a concerned brother, made sure I knew Dad was going to whoop me good. He kept whispering “man, Dad will probably take off the belt for this one” and ” Dad is going to REALLY spank you this time”.

I had to admit, Bob had me going. Alot like the time he faked pain while getting a shot at the doctors office causing me to hide under the table and grip it for dear life (they had to pry my little fingers open). But that`s another story.

Well, Dad only gave me a verbal lashing. I guess I was too old for a spanking. . .not too old not to be stupid, just too old for a spanking.

To this day Libby still wonders whether I did it on purpose.

I will deny it to the end!

In my defense; hey she told a nine year old boy NOT to do something.. .yeah, like that`s going to happen.

She was taking a big chance!

If she wanted to play it safe she should have said “hey, those are cool darts, let me see those a minute, will ya”.

I listened intently to my Dads words (at least as much as I had to) and told Libby I was sorry. She got a tetanus shot and was fine.

I learned a lesson and am just glad we weren`t playing Jarts (lawn darts) otherwise Libby might have had a lobotomy the hard way.

We still laugh about The Dart Experience every time we get together and remember all the fun/dumb/goofy/insane things we did. That`s what life is all about really; the the wonderful experiences we`ve had both good and bad. . .together.

We know one very important thing. . .we love one another, and say it often. We love each other in all situations. That`s what family does or at least should do.

All You Need Is Love, really.

I think there was a Beatles song about love. . .maybe even a few.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.
