Water – A Precious Tourist Resource

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

The dilemma for many tourist regions for 2009 is how to keep fresh, clean water flowing to serve both their full time residents and holidaymakets too.

biza is confronting these challenges. Ibiza is located in the Mediterranean Sea and is the third largest of the Balearic Islands autonomous community of Spain.

The island rests approximately 80 kilometers off Spain`s coast. Ibiza`s largest cities are Ibiza Town, Santa Eula, ria des Riu and Sant Antoni de Portmany.

Ibiza is spending approximately 13.5 million Euros or more than 17.3 million U.S. dollars to get fresh water. Spain`s Ministry of the Environment is spending this to upgrade the islands water infrastructure.

On the island, three plants produce fresh water for residents and tourists. These plants are in Ibiza Town, Santa Eulalia and San Antonio.

Only certain parts of the island have access to this desalinated water. Some areas of Ibiza still get their water from wells. The problem is that water from these wells has high concentrations of calcium and salt. This is not the best for washing hair, dishes or clothing.

The hard water is also not good for dishwashers and washing machines. The mineral deposits from the water build up in pipes and tanks. It`s the same when hard water build up mineral deposits in kettles and coffee machines, which require de-scaling. This is the problem locals and visitors face in certain parts of Ibiza.

The upgrade by The Ministry of the Environment will provide connections to the three desalination plants on the island. Towns and villages on the island will be able to enjoy fresh water. This will make the island even more attractive to visitors who wish to explore this holiday destination who aren`t just visiting for the weather in Ibiza

Ibiza is not the only area facing water challenges. Las Vegas has a continuing battle on their hands with H2O. Las Vegas has been experiencing droughts in recent years.

A trend that may continue for the near future, it has officials concerned. In 2007, some news reports in the city said that proposed water projects are falling short of what the area will require.

There is also significant population growth in Las Vegas. This is putting a strain on the water supply in itself. Then couple that with the influx of tourists daily, and their water needs. Water levels at neighbouring Lake Mead in Nevada have dropped. In recent years, they are half of what they were seven years ago.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority has spent millions for new pumps to bring water in from the lake. This expenditure doubled the capacity of the second water intake drawing drinking water from Lake Mead.

The Water Authority is also working to pipe in groundwater from White Pine County. The first water will not flow into Las Vegas until 2012.

Las Vegas fears a larger crisis. Officials fear continuing droughts and lack of pipelines bringing in water from sources other than Lake Mead will cause water shortages. They believe the gap in water use and water supply will affect half a million people by 2012.

Worldwide the problem of fresh water is a serious one. Mexico has a problem with clean drinking water. Much of their water supply is contaminated by pollution.

Some areas of this popular tourist country do not have running water. Some areas of Mexico have no sewage service. Tourists often receive warnings not to drink the water in Mexico, to drink bottled water from quality sources instead.

This past March, Cyprus faced their battle with continuing drought. This led them to purchase water from Greece. The country ordered emergency water rationing and imports from Greece.

This was to get a grip on a growing shortage caused by a fourth year of drought. Cyprus saw their reservoir reserves drop significantly. In March, the island`s reservoirs were 10.3 percent full. Desalination plants could not cope with the growing demand.

It seems fresh water is the new oil for some areas. It`s in great demand and in short supply. It is vital to regions that rely on tourist dollars and euros for economic survival.

It costs money for governments to install the infrastructure for fresh water. To serve citizens and visitors properly, this investment will be necessary in years to come.

Ibiza`s airport and cheap flight to Ibiza deals are online along with a host of other cheap holidays in Ibiza information.

Arkansas USA – A Prime Tourist Destination

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

The ancestors of the Indians were the first to inhabit Arkansas due to its fertile lands and vast wild life. These Indians came out of caves and started living permanently in these lands and started hunting and harvesting crops.

In 1541 a Spanish explorer, Hernando De Soto became the first European to set foot on this soil. The first European settlement was set in 1686 by Henry De Tonti with six persons. He is thus called the “Father of Arkansas.”

Population increased considerably in the 19th Century. Arkansas was drawn into the civil War in May 1861 and the reason for this War was to get out of the control of the US and start its own Government.

The next 25 years saw a lot of development ie. Telephone, Electricity and Water was provided to its residents. The City Sewer System made life easier for its people. 500 miles of Rail Track was laid. Many Schools and Colleges also started coming up. Unofficially, Arkansas used to be labelled the `Land of Oppertunities` around 1875.`

The 20th century saw more developments in all fields e.g. Radio, Airplanes, Talking movies and life changed dramatically after TVs came. Then the Government found Oil and Gas reserves in Arkansas. Taxes were levied on them and the income generated was used to promote the condition of paved roads. The whole Infrastructure was improved.

In 1904 the Farmers learnt that they could grow rice too and this led to a huge increase in their income. The Livestock and Dairy also increased a lot. In the last 90 years there has been a delicate balance between the Farmers and Industrialists.

In the last 500 years Arkansas has come from a Wild West to a more sophisticated State of Farming, Lumbering, Manufacturing and Tourism.

Herman Davis State Park is a one acre small Park surrounding the monument of Herman Davis, a World War I hero. He received many gallantry awards after the War from both the American and French Governments.

Louisiana Purchase State Park is the Center point for purchasing property in the States of Lee, Monroe and Philips Counties. These 36 acres Farm have a Head Water Swamp, something that is ecologically disappearing fast.

Old Davidsonville State Park was made in 1815. Arkansas`s first Post-Office, Courthouse and Land office is there and Fishing is a major activity in this area as the Site borders with the Black River and a 12 acre Fishing Lake. Offering Boat Docks, Fishing and Pedal Boats and Barrier free Fishing pier. Facilities include a Camping Site, Picnic Areas, Hiking, Playgrounds and two standard Pavilions.

Tours may include a visit to the local Print Museum, Steam Powered Cotton-Gin and dining at Williams Tavern Restaurant. If you want to explore Arkansas historically and genealogically then go to South West Arkansas Regional Archives.

The only cave system operated and maintained by the US government is Blanchard Springs Caverns and it comes in the top 10 of North America. It`s open the year around and offers two tours to the Massive Underground Spectacle.

Good fun is provided by theaters to people of every age at the Aerospace Education Center. Exhibition of American/Russian space hardware, Antique Aircraft, Aerospace Library and a gift Shop awaits you.

In Little Rock Zoo you will find over 600 different Birds, Reptiles, Mammals and Amphibians. They are enclosed in open areas and Wild Protection Area building.

Many things to do in Arkansas as you can see – so visit soon.

While Visiting Paris -Top Tourist Attractions for Weekend Getaways in Paris

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Copyright 2005 Fionnuala Downhill

As the second largest city of Western Europe, Paris is known as the City of Lights for its well-lit displays in the late hours, which calls to visiting tourists from around the world. It is the home of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and many more vacationer attractions.

What can you see in a weekend in Paris? If you`re visiting Paris for only a short while, try these suggestions on the top hot spots. You can`t miss these!

Visiting Popular Attractions In Paris

Rising up over 300 meters tall, this steel structure, the Eiffel Tower, can be seen throughout most locations around the city. Elevators lift visiting tourists to the top to get a bird`s eye view of Paris. As it is lit up in the evening, it is one of the most beautiful sights in the entire city. Guided tours add to the thrill as you get to peek into history on how it was made and what it means to the French today.

The opera building, Opera de Paris Garnier started its history back in 1862 when its construction began. It took over ten years to complete, because an underground lake was discovered under the location and was completed in 1875. Tours and shows continue to operate through this attraction for those visiting Paris, though now mainly used for ballet performances since the construction of Opera de Paris Bastille, another distinctive entertainment tourist spot.

Visiting Museums In Paris

One of the largest and most famous museums is the Louvre of Paris, and visiting it is none other than an opportunity of a lifetime. With over 300,000 wonderful artistic works, you simply cannot see all of it in one day. An entire weekend could be spent simply gazing at the thousands of painting, including Leonardo da Vinci`s world famous Mona Lisa.

For something more exciting for children and families, try the Centre Pompidou. It not only contains a museum of modern art, but a bookstore and a library among other things. The museum, featuring the works of artists like Matisse and Picasso, holds one of the largest collections of cubist, surrealist and abstract art.

Photo Opportunities for People Visiting Paris

You don`t need to be Catholic to appreciate the majestic architecture of Notre-Dame. Its construction was made to fit a monumental scale, and plans were made to enlarge it even before the cathedral was completed. While not the biggest, it is the most famous and one of the grandest cathedrals in the entire world.

Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, the Arc de Triomphe, it is engraved with the names of the generals that commanded his troupes. It now stands as a monument to the era and a popular photo spot for tourists visiting Paris. The Arc also features an observatory to take in surrounding views.

If you`re still looking for something that will arouse the attention of the entire family, try the Jardin du Luxembourg, a 224,500 square meter park. An octagon pond called the Grand Bassin is located in the center of the park. It is here that children can rent toy motorboats for a fun afternoon. You can also check out the puppet shows, chess games, it`s many statues and it`s two famous fountains, the Fontaine de Medicis and the Fontaine de l`Observatoire, at the north and south ends of the park.

Obviously, these are not the only tourist spots, but upon visiting Paris, these are the most popular and are certainly not to be missed. Most of these locations offer regular guided tours, some at little to no cost. Call your travel agent and make arrangements to visit these locations.

A Cornish walk: a simple tourist activity, but an absolute must for an English holiday

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Cornwall has always been a favourite holiday destination and its dramatic coastline, picturesque villages, vibrant culture and sumptuous cuisine. For those visitors who have travelled to the region, the benefits of a Cornish holiday need no explaining, but for our international friends, who have yet to explore outside of London, a visit to Cornwall will give you a very different taste of English life. In this article, I describe one of my favourite walks in Cornwall and thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Parts of the walk between St Agnes and the Jericho Valley have been trodden so often by my sturdy boots, that they practically know their own way. It`s one of my favourite stretches of coastal path for its spectacular views across the turquoise waters to the huge stretch of beach at Penhale; the ever-present tang of salt hanging in the air; the dramatic cliffs bordered with a mosaic of gorse, heather and thrift; plus it conveniently links my house with the beach, the pub and my favourite seaside restaurant.

St Agnes was once a busy centre of mining activity, the relics of which are dotted all around this walk. Today it is still a very community-minded village with a friendly population boosted during the summer by the visitors attracted by the village`s charming unspoilt character, its beautiful coastline and popular beach. The village is well equipped for walkers, with some beautiful, quintessentially English cottages and hotels ( holiday accommodation ), and some superb restaurants which take advantage of Cornwall`s fantastic local produce.

On this walk you`ll first head southwards on the coast path up a fairly steep climb away from the picturesque Trevaunance Cove. Just above the beach if you peer down at low tide you`ll see the scattered stones of the former harbour walls, deposited when storms swept it away in 1915/16. At a higher tide with a gentle swell you may see one or two of the resident seals putting in an appearance.

Continuing along the coast path you`ll be rewarded with amazing views – careful though, some of the drops are quite sheer in places. You`ll pass a number of capped mine shafts and a couple of benches where you can enjoy the view of Bawden Rocks, also known as Man and His Man. Every summer daring swimmers from the village swim the mile out to this rock and back.

After about half a mile along the coast path you head inland and up towards the Beacon, the 192 metre high hill that overlooks St Agnes. Legend has it that a giant called Bolster could stand with one foot on The Beacon and the other on Carn Brea six miles away. If you fancy a detour then trek up it for some fantastic views from Padstow in the north, to the clay country and south to St Ives.

Otherwise the route skirts the bottom of the Beacon, and then follows a path to St Agnes village. Here locals bustling about their day-to-day business will be brushing shoulders with day-trippers and holiday makers. Stop for a browse around some of the fascinating arts and crafts galleries, or pause for a coffee outside the St Agnes Hotel. If you feel like staying overnight, there is some lovely holiday accommodation in the area, as well as a very high standard of local pubs and restaurants. ( Restaurants in Newquay and Perranporth )

Next you`ll see the quirky row of sea captain`s cottages known as Stippy-Stappy, then follow the road for a short time before you descend off left into Trevellas Combe. Following a clear trickling stream through woodland, you`ll pass the isolated Jericho Cottage, once owned by renowned Cornish artist John Opie. Near here, we got a fright when a grass snake slithered across the path in front of us.

You emerge out of the valley at Blue Hills Tin Streams, where you can see a working water wheel and tin smelting in the traditional way. Then perhaps stop at Trevellas beach for a paddle. Head up the steep hill to the left of the beach. It`s a toughie this one, but there`s a strategically placed bench half way up! At Easter this area is buzzing with an array of classic cars racing their way around a track.

You can get round this walk in a speedy two and half hours, but I think you should allow about four. In that time you`ll have journeyed through centuries of life in this colourful part of Cornwall and should go home with a real taste of how this friendly community has evolved in that time.

Responsible Tourism and the Tourist in Tanzania

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Responsible Tourism in Tanzania has become a marketing tool for the safari industry. The welfare of our communities may, at times, be of genuine concern to the safari company although, sadly, many times it is not. Can you, the traveler, do anything toward changing the safari companies to support responsible tourism? Indeed, yes it is possible to make a difference. Responsible Tourism should give back to the community and you the tourist can and should change the industry; it is your money after all.

Responsible tourism is an attitude of mind to which every traveler should all aspire. To choose a company that supports the community in deed and not in word only is the key; by employing some discernment this task should not be difficult. Your travel agent or safari company might not have a real presence in Tanzania. They may confidently spout fair trade values and a responsible tourism ethos, however, the very fact they are not present in Tanzania makes it difficult for them to do as they claim. Always insist in knowing who the ground operator is and check them out. Look carefully at what they claim they are doing.

When visiting Tanzania it is possible to visit the community projects that are being supported by your presence in the county. Alternatively, after choosing the correct operator, you prefer just simply relax and enjoy your safari, then do just that.

Charities are increasingly looking to become self finding, this means becoming leaner and becoming more responsible; becoming a business. Some charities use tourism to fund community projects. All the funds raised through tourism go toward building schools, clinics and caring for young children who would otherwise be left to fend for themselves on the streets.

Some charities have become very good tour operators. These professionally run charities or tour operations allow the community to build itself a brighter future on the back of tourism. These companies offer boutique style safaris and specialize in showing clients the real Africa in style, comfort and safety. All the profits remain in Tanzania and all the profits go into the community.

When on safari and you are amongst local people – remember you are their guest – treat them with the regard a visitor should show toward the host. Many of the National Parks are home to people whose economy is based on livestock; respect the local customs and traditions and dress code. Often we see the tourist has little respect for the dress code of other cultures. It is not pretty to see tourism interfere with the native peoples work and private lives; use common sense and remember what is acceptable in your culture may not be acceptable in a more traditional culture.

Tanzania has over the past few years risen from relative obscurity and now enjoys tourists in ever increasing numbers. There are good reasons for this. There is no tribalism in Tanzania; it is safe. Tanzania is gentle and friendly and peace loving.

Tanzania has Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, the Selous and Zanzibar. This remarkable country does not stop at these few destinations either; so much more is on offer. Tanzania is a country to visit, for fauna, flora, culture and to experience real Africa in a safe environment.

For more information on responsible tourism and Tanzania can be found on the following websites http://www.betheladventure.co.uk – or alternatively http://www.aardvark-expeditions.com – using tourism to change lives.

Tanzania Culture vs. the Tourist

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Cultural additions are the latest fashion when taking a safari in Tanzania. I think this is a good thing although I must admit to having one or two misgivings. The people and culture of Tanzania are wonderful and to share this culture is an inexpressible privilege.

A genuine experience, a cultural encounter of the third kind should be top of your list if you are planning to pack your bags and head out for sunny Tanzania. There are, of course, many pseudo experiences on offer. An off-the-shelf cultural tour just won`t cut the mustard; you will quite simply be left feeling ripped off.

Every town in high season has its groups of self conscious western tourists doing their best to fit into the surrounds, when in fact they so painful don`t belong. The white skins of the northern Europeans freshly pinked from the cruel African sun. There they stand huddled into a group unsure of which way to go, what to do and looking thoroughly harassed.

A good start to enjoying your cultural experience is to organise a home visit and not to try too hard. Show respect; and don`t be afraid of the dreaded silence. Sometimes it is better to accept the silence and thereby allow everyone to settle into the stillness. We in the west feel a silence is a void that must be filled at all costs. Do not fear the silence; fear being the fool who rushes in to make a noise where none is necessary.

The visit to a school or better still to visit a home cannot be rushed. Leave your watch at the hotel; it is an instrument of torment for a westerner in Africa. To share food, if offered is a must, to refuse is a slur to your host. Once you have eaten don`t hang around for too long. Your host will normally wait for you to say you are leaving. It is not rude to leave as soon as you have eaten. Many times the finishing of a meal can signal the end to the visit.

Your new found friends will now be able to show you places you would not normally get to see. You now have a personal guide who knows the area and the language, who is not trying to sell you curious or a safari you don`t want. Suddenly you are not a tourist.

The next stage is to progress from the home visit is short term voluntary work. These may last from a day or two to a few weeks, hospitals, schools or building projects are the norm. The experience is life changing – for everyone. Remember, however poor you may think you are, by third world standards you not. Do not resent your guests if they seem preoccupied with what you consider to be your money. Accept it, deal with it, and don`t make into an issue of discontent.

These trips can end in tears if not handled properly. I have witnessed, very occasionally, people struggling with the local customs, living conditions, food and especially the lack of water. Plan your visit and look for an organisation, or tour operator that is able to place you in a community and situation that you will feel comfortable. Do not try to become a hard core mission worker in one afternoon.

The Tanzanian people are truly friendly and love to welcome guests into their homes. The experience is indeed remarkable for individuals or couples. The secret is to relax and be prepared for a few surprises and don`t be afraid to laugh with your hosts. You will return home a better person for your experience. Be warned, that once you begin to enjoy Tanzania you will return again and again.

For more information on these issues or any relating to Tanzania see htpp://www.tanzania-info.co.uk and http://www.betheladventure.co.uk tourism can change lives.

This location is a romantic hot spot for all of the couples who step foot on the island. The following paragraphs will highlight some wonderful attractions and activities for visiting couples to take part in while vacationing in Maui.

Waterfall Hikes
Maui is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. Centered amongst tropical rainforests, taking a hike to one of these fabulous natural settings exudes romance to the fullest extent. As many of the hiking tour companies keep their tour groups to a minimum amount of people, the couple engaging in the hike can still keep some of that romantic atmosphere even though they are with other people. Some tours, for an extra cost, may even accommodate a tour with the couple alone. One tour company that provides wonderful waterfall hikes is Maui Hiking Safaris in Pukalani.

Helicopter Tour
Some say that the best possible way to see all they possibly can of Maui is to do so by air. This is where the various helicopter tours come in handy. There is also something romantic about viewing the beautiful scenery of Maui in a helicopter with a loved one close by one`s side. Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours of Maui provide this attraction for visitors to the island. For those couples who can`t wait to hop in the water, there are a number of snorkeling tours available for individuals to join in on while in Maui. Snorkeling with a loved one amongst the graceful sea creatures and fabulous scenery is another way to spend a romantic time with one`s companion. Some of these tours also provide lunch and other activities as well.

Attend a Luau
Luaus are wonderful events to attend while staying in Maui. One not only gets to indulge in a wide array of Hawaiian delicacies but gets to enjoy fabulous entertainment as well. Couples visiting Maui will especially enjoy this event as it gives them some time together to just sit back, relax, eat and enjoy the show all the while spending quality time with one another. One famous Maui luau that is attended by many individuals each year is the Royal Lahaina Luau.

Walks along the Beach
Perhaps one of the most popular, free attractions for couples to partake in while on the island of Maui is countless walks along the beautiful stretches of beach. This is a great way to get some alone time with one`s significant other while taking in all of the beauty that surrounds them in this Hawaiian paradise. Feel the romance while walking, talking and enjoying the scenery.

Horseback Riding Tours
For all of the couples out there who are animal lovers as well, there are a number of horseback riding tour companies that provide a variety of tours for the visiting public. This can also be an exceptionally romantic tour for individuals to take part in. Some tours will have small groups and couples may even be able to find tour companies that provide private horseback riding tours for that extra romantic element. Riding through the beautiful areas of Maui and perhaps even stopping for a picnic lunch in between is a great way to bring on the romance.

Romantic Dining Establishments
Another way for couples to feel the romantic component of Maui is to dine at some of the many romantic restaurants on the island. Enjoying a nice candlelit meal at a fine dining establishment on Maui is a great way to spend some quality time with a loved one. Some restaurants may even provide couples packages where the entire dining experience is one which portrays a romantic atmosphere.

Maui is an island that is romantic in and of itself. The previously mentioned items are just a few suggestions for those couples looking to get all they can from their romantic Maui experience.

Maui is a wonderful spot to visit for land and water adventurers alike as one will surely not be disappointed with the options that wait for them on this great island.

Ireland For Todays Tourist.

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Ireland today is being promoted heavily by the hotels and businesses that stand to gain financially from the tourism industry. The main thrust of their campaigns seems to be based on the quality of their accommodation. They do have a lot to offer in the modern hotels with indoor heated swimming pools, fully equipped gyms, a quality dining experience, luxury surroundings and much much more. But, it seems to me that the modern traveller needs more than a high standard of accommodation. He/she needs an attractive and interesting destination to generate a truly memorable holiday. After all few people travel halfway around the world just to stay in the hotel and see nothing of the surrounding country.

Ireland is a destination that can match any in the world. It has an ancient culture full of life and tradition. This culture is growing and changing almost daily. A visitor to Ireland, `The Land Of A Thousand Welcomes` will witness this change from an ancient culture of tradition filled with myths and legends, superstition and religious fanaticism to a modern culture which is still deeply religious and respectful of its traditional heritage but now tempers this with the high standard of education the young people get today.

What is there to see?
Ireland has a great tradition in theatre. We are not short of theatres in Ireland though of course we can always use more. Nor are we short of racetracks, but, I am not going to list all the activities that await the discerning visitor. That would mean that this would just turn into a long long list. I just want to highlight some of what I think are the more interesting ones.

The Arts Festivals and Music Festivals are not to be missed. The Arts Festivals are a coming together of all the best of Irish Arts including but not limited to theatre, spectacle, street art, music, comedy, literature, music and more with many participants visiting from other countries. The Galway Arts Festival (recommended) goes from July 13th to July 30th.

The scenery in Ireland is famous throughout the world and with places like Roundstone in Galway, the Ring of Kerry and the cliffs of Moher in Clare on your itinerary you cannot go wrong. There are old castles and traditional stately homes like Bunratty Castle and Westport House and Ashford Castle and Clonalis House. For those who like that sort of thing there is a long list of them beautifully restored and looking at least as good as they did when they were in use, and many of them even offer accommodation usually to a standard difficult to match anywhere in the world.

No matter what part of Ireland you visit now you will find a shopping experience that will impress. The large multi-national companies seem to have a local branch almost everywhere, alongside the indigenous shops who have a more traditional offering. Small country towns still have the old style shops where you can get almost anything and some of them even still have a pub behind the shop.

There are many show-farms to visit, hurling matches to see and people to talk to.
The traditional Irish thatched cottage is still in use by ordinary people in many parts of Ireland. Though they are seen by many to be old and dated they are admired and appreciated by as many more.

There are many islands around Ireland, but, if you are heading west I recommend that you visit The Aran Islands. You can fly or sail there are now a number of companies running boats several times a day. They will give a view of Ireland and an insight into our culture not found anywhere else in the country.

If you don`t have enough reason to visit Ireland now I don`t know what to say. Good luck, and God bless.
