Palm Treo Pro: Jewel on My Palm

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

The Treo Pro along with GPS and Wi-Fi was first released in August last and tech specs on the new smart phone also hit the Web. Treo Pro runs on Windows Mobile, it has a touch screen and stylus, Wi-Fi, and a micro USB port for charging and syncing data, among other features. The new Windows Mobile device supports features like an HSDPA cell radio (tri-band UMTS, quad-band GSM), GPS, 802.11b/g, a 320 x 320 touchscreen display, 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM, a 2-megapixel camera, support for microSDHC cards up to 32GB. and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Generous battery life and voice quality and efficient GPS are really impressive.

Aesthetically, the Treo Pro looks very much like a combination of Palm`s popular consumer-oriented-smartphone, the Centro, and Treo 800w device. The Treo Pro experience starts with handsome packaging. The phone was designed by former Apple executive Jon Rubinstein, a key iPod creator.

An installation CD for Microsoft ActiveSync software is no longer supplied. You just connect the Treo via USB cable to your computer to install the program and synchronize contacts, calendar entries and so on. The USB also charges the device.

With its smooth casing, the Treo Pro certainly feels like it means business. Keys on the traditional qwerty keyboard are tightly spaced but usable, at least with my average-size fingers. Treo Pro weighs about 4.7 ounces and is a lot thinner than other Treos. It`s a tad thicker than the iPhone but not to the point that you much notice when holding the two devices. Have you held Palm in your Palm yet?

Motorola Q- Razrberry – Treo 650 Killer ?

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

As a self-proclaimed Treo 650 Junkie, I am always making sure there is no competing device that I should be lusting after…A few weeks ago I started to see reports about the Motorola Q

This phone seems to be Motorola`s answer to the Treo 650 (or maybe even the Treo 700!). It`s a thin somewhat attractive PDA phone running windows. What makes it more like a Treo (or the upcoming Blackberry 8300c) is its form factor including the compact QWERTY keyboard.

My test for the true usefulness of a QWERTY keyboard is whether I can write an email comfortably with one hand while stopped at a traffic light. Usually to add to this test I need to do so without my wife noticing (”could you please stop emailing while you`re driving!?”) and all this over the noise of our 6 kids, 4 of whom are under the age of 4.

So if I were deciding which PDA to get in the next 3-5 months it would be between: Treo 650/700 Blackberry 8300c and the Motorola Q.

My criteria – Assuming excellent reception, Bluetooth, and basic feautures…
- Ease of use (Palm Treo 650 might beat the others because of Palm OS here)
- Weight and Coolness (Motorola Q might be the winner on this one – but I need to see it to be sure)
- Durability (The Blackberry 8300c for Cingular might win on this count – Blackberries are famously durable)
- Price (not sure which one will be the best value – usually switching carriers is the best plan to get lower equipment costs.)

So why the excitement over the Motorola Q?
I think the main reason is because of how Motorola is changing how people view their cell phones. Look at the runaway success of the Motorola Razr V3 for Cingular and T-Mobile. Look also at the upcoming Magenta (can you say `pink`?) and Baby Blue (uh, it looks grey to me!) phones. Motorola is doing a great job in branding as well as advertising while also giving a great feature set at a low price.

The one drawback I can find – the one that might keep me from getting the Motorola Q? No touchscreen. I am not sure why they would have designed this device without one… I think the main problem with no touch screen will be getting Treo faithful to switch over. So if you are into the touch this may not be for you.

If Motorola Can do for the Motorola Q what it did for Razor phone – we may see a virtual explosion in sales of PDAs past the corporate Blackberry zone.

Treo 700 PDA — The 240×240 Dilema

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Copyright 2006 Steve Bralovich

Today, many Pocket PC phones have 240×240 resolution because Windows Mobile 5.0 doesn`t support 320×320 resolution and the next square screen resolution supported is 480×480.

However, when it comes to prices of touch screens, the screens with 480×480 are too expensive. So Pocket PC phone manufacturers, who wanted to use square resolution in order to accommodate a QWERTY keyboard, were forced into 240×240.

Examples of devices sporting the square screens are the HP iPaq HW6500 series, HW6900 series, Palm Treo 700w, and Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX T830 Pocket PC phones. Look for some others later in 2006.

When regular Pocket PC applications and games are run, the square screens cut off the information below the 240 pixel mark. Sometimes, they do scroll but often that`s not the case which means that about 25 percent of the display is missing.

The only real solution to this problem is to have software that is designed specifically to accommodate the 240×240 resolution.

Developers have begun to rework existing games and applications to work on square screen devices but a convenient list of what`s currently available is a little difficult to come by.

A complete list would be impossible to write about in this article but here is a sampling of popular applications and games that are known to be 240×240 and Treo 700 ready:

XCPUScalar — Treo 700 Software Review

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Copyright 2006 Steve Bralovich

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom…

The need for speed is not just for automotive racing fans.

Your Treo 700 is a highly connected, multimedia device and as such the ability to watch streamed videos or play games makes it one of the best reasons to buy one in the first place.

Alas, these tasks have a cost on your battery life and you may not be taking full advantage of your 700`s processor to operate at it`s peak performance which can make your device feel sluggish.

Even if you`re not a power user, your CPU may be draining your battery unnecessarily. This could set up a situation where you drop or miss calls on your phone.

Fortunately, the XCPUScalar utility software by ImmierSoft can allow you to overcome these limitations and make your Treo 700 operate at optimum efficiency.

Your Treo 700 runs on an Intel® XScale 312MHz processor and has a 240×240 square screen display. Version 2.93 of XCPUScalar supports this configuration and will increase performance up to 30-35 percent.

System Requirements:

- Treo 700 running WM 5.0

**Note: (This utility runs on many devices. Not just Treo 700`s)

Program Features:

- Auto Scaling to assign speeds to different CPU loads – Speed can be scaled from 100 to 728MHZ – Auto Start on Soft Resets – Today Screen system tray support – Sticky Settings – Hardware KeyLock – Display Toggle – Power Off and Soft Reset – Launch from Anywhere – Stealth Mode – Task manager integration

The default tab when starting XCPUScalar is Speed.

This is where you can determine the speed at which your PDA should run or select Auto Scale. The Advanced tab is where you set the Auto Scale levels.

Auto-Scale adjusts the performance of your Treo 700 depending on the demand being placed on your XScale processor. This setting will work for most users but you should experiment with the settings manually to see which combination works best for your type of use.

I was able to achieve around 40-50 minutes extra battery life per day. This could be a crucial saving for users relying on their phones.

Of course, how much increase in battery life you will actually attain will vary from person to person depending on what software you`re running and how much time you spend talking on the Treo 700 phone.

Even if you`re not a power user most of the time, setting the performance lower will save your batteries significantly.

It`s a trade-off between speed and battery life that XCPUScalar helps you to balance in an effective and practical way.

Noteworthy Features:

- taskBar CPU Meter displays your current speed and CPU usage percentile to keep you aware of processor workload

- the ability to modify the CPU usage range in 5% increments to finetune your 700.

- meters tab displays the current CPU Meter, Battery Life, and Memory (Storage and Program). Gives you a better overall view of your device status.

Pros:

- Increased speed OR – Increased battery life – User customizable options – Great support – $17.95 price is more than fair for what the product offers

Cons:

- manufacturers may have warranty issues with XCPUScalar – drop down menus are a little small

Overall Impression:

I`ve been running XCPUScalar on several devices since version 2.5 and have had nothing but good things to report about it since that time.

If you`re a power Treo 700 user looking to save time and speed up your device, you should consider buying the XCPUScalar utility software by ImmierSoft.

Your videos, games and other multimedia software will speed up dramatically with this application and your battery life will improve significantly at times when the load on your CPU is not as demanding.

Palm Treo: Getting Started With Your New Treo Smartphone

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Copyright 2006 Christopher Meinck

Getting Started With a Palm Treo Smartphone
For many, adding a Palm Treo smartphone to their life is an exciting time. Most are coming from a traditional cellphone and the capabilities of a smartphone never seize to amaze. The Palm Treo features a large color LCD screen, full keyboard and software for syncing your personal data with your PC or Mac. Getting familiar with the capabilities of your new Treo smartphone can be overwhelming in the beginning. Once you get over the initial learning curve, owning a Treo can be a rewarding experience.

Protecting Your Treo
The Palm Treo is an expensive gadget, so you should make plans to protect your Treo. In the US, both Verizon and Sprint offer insurance on the Treo. For a fee of roughly $5, you can insure your Treo against loss or accidents. With insurance, youll have the piece of mind that your valuable Treo is protected. If your wireless provider does not offering insurance, another option is to sign up for the StuffBak protection program. Stuffbak is a loss prevention and recovery service. You purchase a Stuffbak label that gets applied to the back of your Treo. Should you lose your Treo, there is an 800# that allows the finder to collect a reward upon return.

Insurance and recovery services are both great options should something happen to your Treo. The best option is to protect your Treo smartphone with a good case and screen protector. There are many options when it comes to selecting a case for the Treo. When choosing a case, you can select from holster, pouch, skin, wallet and more. In most cases, its also a good idea to add a screen protector. Through the daily use of your Treo, you will find yourself touching the screen quite often. A screen protector will guard against scratches and its recommended even if youve opted for an enclosed case. Adding the correct Treo accessory can protect your smartphone for many years.

Treo Software
Out of the box, Palm OS based Treo smartphones comes bundled with all the software you need to sync with your PC or Mac. If you own a Mac, then you should avoid the Treo 700w. In order to sync the 700w with a Macintosh, you would have to use third party software such as Missing Sync by Mark/Space and they do not currently support the Treo 700w. If you are upgrading from a previous Palm device, youll still want to install the software that came with your new Treo. Follow the on-screen directions and youll be able to bring your data over to your new Treo. As a previous Palm owner, you should note that some applications might not work on your Treo. To be certain, locate and rename the Backup folder located in your User folder. Once youve completed the transfer of your PIM data, you can add one application at a time to insure compatibility with your Treo.

One of the great things about the Treo is vast catalog of available software applications. There are countless freeware and commercial applications. If you own a Palm OS based Treo, then be sure to look for software that supports your model. Owners of the Treo 700w should look for Pocket PC titles that support the Windows Mobile 5 operating system. In either case, its best to slowly add software. Adding incompatible software is the most common cause of an unstable Treo.

Get To Know Treo
The Treo is a remarkable device that offers robust software to help you manage your calendar, check email, browse the web, take photos, listen to MP3s and more. With any new technology, there is a slight learning curve and the Treo is no different. I encourage any new Treo owner to explore the features of their new smartphone. If you have questions, there are several good resources online or you can visit your local bookstore. Once youve mastered the basics, youll be left wondering how you ever managed without a Treo.

Boa, SkinTight and Magnum Treo Cases Are Functional, Classy and Accessible

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

As technology expands to give us more and better ways to communicate and stay in contact with others, it becoming more and more crucial to protect our devices from everyday wear and tear and the punishment inherent to specific applications. Increasingly, Treo cases are being designed that combine safety, security, access, functionality, affordability and style. Three new types of Treo cases—Boa, SkinTight and Magnum—blend all of these qualities.

The Boa vertical case uses superior materials and workmanship, in conjunction with hand-selected, premium materials. These beautiful, functional and durable cases have a magnetic closure and a magnetic case that can be snapped off to make it into a quick-access holster. The eight-position, locking, 360-degree swivel belt clip allows for secure handling, while the material still offers plenty of protection. With a sophisticated, sharp, modern design and options for black, brown or pink coloring, the boa cases boast stylish qualities and features not available in any other cases. To sweeten the deal, a matching magnetic money clip/key ring is included with these luxurious cases.

SkinTight rubberized cases are sleek, functional and protective, guarding against scratches, dings and other damage. The rubbery texture offers a good feel for your hand and also ensures that your device won`t slide off the dashboard. The case has a sturdy, detachable holster with a 360-degree swivel clip and strategic cutouts that allow access to all of your device functions. A flip-up, hard-plastic screen cover combines screen protection with easy access. The molded, ergonomic grips improve thumb typing on the exposed keyboard. Select blue, clear or black colors and eliminate bulk and inconvenience with a SkinTight case.

Constructed of lightweight, highly tensile magnesium alloy, the Magnum cases are great for applications where maximum protection is required. Magnesium is 20 times stronger than the traditionally used ABS plastic and 37 percent lighter than aluminum. The interior is lined with black neoprene to serve as a shock absorber and a removable belt clip and post system ensures secure fastening. A perfectly clear plastic window protects the display, while cutouts allow access to the main navigation and application buttons. The stylish, functional Magnum case just may be the safest, most rugged Treo case on the market.

Cheap Way To Unlock Your Treo INSTANTLY!

Friday, December 5th, 2008

If you have a Palm Treo and would like to switch service provider, you will need to get it unlocked. In the past that meant sending it off to someone and having them unlock it for you. Or paying your provider big bucks to unlock it. But you can now do it from your own home for as little as 15$. Sites such as CellUnlockCode sell two ways of unlocking your Treo. By unlock code or unlock software.

Easy to use unlock software will have your Treo unlocked in minutes. Once your order is placed, you will instantly receive an email with the unlock software, instructions, and a username and password. Then its just a matter of following the instructions to install the software and drivers, and within a couple of minutes you should have your Treo unlocked and ready for use on ANY GSM network. Remember that your Treo MUST be GSM to have it unlocked. Supported models are the Treo 650, 680, 750, and 750v. New models are added all the time, so if yours isn`t listed, I suggest you check the page to make sure.

CellUnlockCode can also unlock your Treo with an unlock code. For about 10-20$ more you can avoid using unlock software and simply send them your 15 digit IMEI number (which you can get by pressing * # 0 6 # on your keypad). The unlock code will work for ANY GSM Treo locked to Cingular/AT&T or T-Mobile. Once you place your order and send them your IMEI number, they will send you your unlock code along with instructions on how to enter it into your Treo. It generally takes about 1-2 days for them to send you your unlock code.

There are many benefits to getting your Treo unlocked. First of all it`s 100% legal so you don`t have to worry about whether or not you`re breaking the law. In addition to the freedom of being able to switch providers, it also increases the resale value of your phone. Another great feature is that it can become very convenient if you are traveling abroad. For instance, an unlocked cellphone would allow you buy a local simcard and save on any phone calls you make.

Regardless of which unlock method you chose, both are quick and painless. We highly recommend CellUnlockCode as their prices are amongst the cheapest on the net, and customer service is extremely quick.

Ivan Cuxeva endorses Robert who is the owner of CellUnlockCode.com. A website that specializes in unlocking Motorola, Blackberry, Treo, and many other phones quickly and easily.

Palm Inc Raised the Bar with Treo Smart Phones

Friday, December 5th, 2008

In the last decade, mobile phones have stopped being juts a device for voice calls but have become a gadget for data communications. First, there was SMS or Short Message Service, a service that allowed people to send alphanumeric messages to mobile phones using the GSM network. Now the mobile phones have been packed with so many features including full keyboards, multi-media support capacity, internet connectivity and other mobile applications.

Palm Inc. was among the first to introduce Smart phones with emailing and internet connectivity and full keyboards that made it easy to use the mobile phone as an extension of one`s office. It allowed voice and data connectivity, both very important features for professionals on the go.

Today , the Treo Smart Phones from Palm Inc. are among the top choices of business executives and other professionals because of the mobile applications that allow people to use their phones for a variety of purposes. All high technology features of the Treo Smart phones would be for naught if it weren`t for its ease of use. The latest Treo Smart Phones with Windows OS are even more easy to use than the first Smart phones introduced years ago. The Windows OS also allow the Treo Smart phones to handle Windows documents better allowing you to work seamlessly between your PC and your mobile phone. Both the Windows OS and the Palm OS also make the Treo phones among the fastest mobiles in the market, allowing for a great computing experience and a seamless internet connection.

Today, Treos are still among the much-coveted phones. With WiFi and lighter and slimmer form factors, Palm has really raised the bar in mobile phones. Aside from the voice and data connectivity, the Treo also features a camera and supports both still photo and video. The phone`s operating systems also allow support of various multi-media. Mobile phones these days are really more like mobile computers in a light and tight form. Packed with features, the new mobile phones may be considered cheap considering that such technologies were not available just a decade ago and that owning mobile phones then that only featured voice calls already cost an arm and a leg.

Aside from the quick tour upon phone start up, there are also a number of websites that offer great information on the Treo phones. These websites offer reviews of the latest Treo mobile phones and even the latest discounts and packages from different mobile networks helping consumers get the best deals on Treo Smart phones. There are websites that provide some of the most useful information on Treo phones on the internet. Aside from great deals and packages, these websites even have eBooks or complete guides that will help you learn navigate your mobile phone and get the most out of it. The Smart phones have a lot of great features that are not described in the phones` quick tour. Even if the phone is designed to provide ease-of-use, it is still best to get expert information on your mobile phone.
