Zen Meditation Is More Than Taking Deep Breadths

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

If you had to pinpoint one thing that is essential in the Buddhist practice it would have to be meditation. It is a deep breathing exercise that works to clear stress and helps focus concentration. Many people mistakenly believe that meditation only involves taking deep breaths but there is more to Zen meditation than just that. The practice of Buddhist meditation is one as old as the religion itself and it plays a fundamental role in achieving balance and harmony in a person`s life.

If you are going to practice Zen meditation, then you are going to have to use the zazen. The zazen is all of the positions, breathing and mind clearing exercises that every Buddhist uses.

The Tibetan Buddhist and even the simple Nichiren Buddhist monk practice zazen. Before you begin you need to understand that there are some steps that must be performed before the meditating can start.

The first step in Buddhist meditation is to find your position. This can be one of several positions. The Burmese position is where the legs are folded and the feet both touch the floor.

The best way to be in the Lotus or Half Lotus position is to have your backside elevated on a special pillow, which will allow you to sit freely but with your legs positioned correctly. You can find this pillow online or in many specialty shops.

The Lotus or Half Lotus position involves sitting on the floor with your legs folded up on one another. You will resemble a pretzel in this position and it is definitely a hard one to attain when you are just starting out.

If you have joint pains, then this may not be the best position for you to sit in. In that case you need to sit comfortably in a chair with your feet firmly planted and your shoulders squarely aligned with the rest of your body.

The final part of the Buddhist meditation ritual is your breathing and concentration. Begin by taking in deep breaths through your nose and slowly exhaling the breath from your mouth. At the same time, clear your thoughts and be mindful of what your body is telling you.

Try to slow your breathing down and begin focusing on clearing your mind. It is perfectly fine if you have intrusive thoughts. Now is the time to acknowledge them and then let them go. It is a process of finding peace within yourself and letting go of your stressors.

Zen meditation is something that everyone can attain if the time is taken to learn how to perform meditation properly. No, you may never have the concentration of a Buddhist monk but give yourself some time.

It is a learning experience and you will acquire new knowledge as you undertake some of the Buddhist studies. You do not have to embrace the religion totally, yet you can find peace and tranquility through Buddhist teachings.

Zen And The Art Of Joomla Web Development

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Think you don`t have the time, resources or technical know-how to create, and manage successful PROFESSIONAL website? Think again the world of computing has moved on, genius simplifies complexity. This is design philosophy behind the open source tool joomla. Web development using joomla is no longer the exclusive preserve of the technical,

Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism notable for its emphasis on practice and experiential wisdom—particularly as realized in the form of meditation known as zazen—in the attainment of awakening. As such, it de-emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and the study of religious texts in favor of direct individual experience. While there is not much call for meditation in business or you would think motorcycle maintenance, reflection, as many entrepreneurs and businessmen will tell you is very important, only through hands on application, seeing and doing, can you gain perspective. With a rapid development tool like 2Zen, after a few days, you will know, folly or genius, what needs to be added, what needs to go. Appreciation of the big picture only comes with distance and time. Creative Zen Micro MP3 Player Review

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Jukebox Zen Micro Review With so many portable MP3 players it is hard to tell which one has the most features compared to many other MP3 players in the market. Those who just want a simple MP3 player will find the zen micro to be one of the easiest to operate music player devices today.

Since the jukebox micro is all about size and portability the hard drive can only hold about 4.7 Gigabytes worth of songs which can ad up to 1360 songs encoded at 128kbps which is today`s quality standard (CD quality). There are other versions available which feature upgraded memory of up to 7GB which can hold around three thousand songs following the rule shown above.

As far as sound quality, the Company Creative has received several awards for sound and product quality, and we have seen several times in the past that Creative`s reviews have been even better than iPod`s. The exterior design of this particular MP3 player allows for several exchangeable colors, among the most popular ones we have white, black and blue. Besides its exteriors appearance one of the best features this small player has is the battery life which can go up to 14 hours of continuous MP3 playback, now you and I know that we won`t be listening for 14 straight hours of music unless we are on a plane flying to destinations across the globe.

This MP3 player is mostly for younger folks who don`t mind small menus and touch scrolling buttons, but be careful as to how hard you press these buttons since just a light touch is enough to make them react, you can always control the button sensitivity within the player`s main menu. The software which is bundled with the player is easy to use and the installation is straight forward, although the organizer could have been improved in recent updates by the company as well as the firmware version.

This particular model has been such as success that the manufacturing company decided to upgrade the model by including a “photo” version with a color screen giving this small 8GB version a fully customizable background according to your favorite photos. The line of Zen micro MP3 players is quite innovative, so much that after its release iPod came up with a Nano version of its player in order to bring some market competition, and this is what started the war on full color screen mini-sized MP3 players. With many other companies joining the party the future of portable music players looks very promising.

Creative Zen Vision W Review – Video Formats

Friday, December 5th, 2008

One of the main concerns portable video player enthusiasts lies in the fact that not every good looking player will in fact support the video formats they use the most. For instance some people love the AVI container, other simply like WMV better and others just use a specific format because their favorite media is encoded using such codec.

For many of us, buying an expensive MP3-video player which doesn`t play the desired format is a total pain and things get even worse when we have to use brute PC power to re-encode the media we want to watch on our players, this is why it is very important that the player we are buying supports the container we use the most.

It would be safe to say that AVI is one of the most popular video containers used to share video files on the internet, this container can be H.264, DivX or Xvid compressed these are all video codecs which may be used to produce videos. Another popular format is the MPG container which is one of the older formats around, they may be found in MPG-1 and MPG-2 for DVDs; yet another container which is mostly used by Japanese fan-sub animation fans is the MKV container which can have several audio and subtitle streams all in one file.

The formats supported by the Zen vision W are: MPG1, AVI (Divx, Xvid) and WMV at a maximum resolution of 720X640 which is really good for a portable player which can be connected to a TV in order to watch the movie at full resolution on a bigger screen. At 30GB the amount of movies which can be stored using any of the codecs mentioned can be of up to 42 – 700MB movies, this number may vary according to the bit-rate used to encode each video.

The MKV container is not yet supported but there are other devices which do, however some people don`t want to sacrifice the player aesthetics and price in order to get an extra format. An good feature anime lovers will find useful is the picture display capabilities which can be used to read mangas, all others will find the space and compatibility features just perfect.

Creative Zen Vision W Review – Resolutions

Friday, December 5th, 2008

As the title implies there are several resolutions used to share video on the web, some are meant for streaming video and have a maximum size set and others have a higher quality and can be seen using a TV or a monitor without much quality loss or pixelation.

Basically the bigger we are going to project and blow the picture the bigger the resolution will be needed in the video to meet the demand, meaning that enlarging a 320X240 web-only video to a 52 inch TV will often produce bad image quality, it gets even worse when you try to use a projector, but when it comes to web streaming the 320X240 resolution is optimal and that`s why this is the resolution used by “Youtube” to broadcast their videos.

The Creative Zen Vision W supports several formats and video resolutions which can be “zoomed” using pan & scan features, “stretched” to fill the screen or left with the original resolution to keep the aspect ratio.

With the zoom feature or pan & scan the picture is enlarged from the center in order to fit the screen but both edges of the video (left and right) end up being cropped, that`s if you have an aspect ratio of 16:9 if on the other had you have a 4:3 aspect ratio the edges which might get cropped are the the top and bottom edges, normally this feature is used with wide screen or 16:9 videos.

The “stretch video to fit on screen” feature is used to fill the wide screen of the player without cropping the top or side edges of the video, in other words there is no loss through this setting, however if your video is originally 4:3 the actors might look smaller and/or fatter because the aspect ratio is not kept as the original, as bad as it may sound the distortion is not that bad. The player can handle almost any video resolution from 720X640 and lower, if you go any higher which would in fact be HD Video resolutions the player will reject the media because it is not meant to reproduce HD video (yet).

MP3 Players – The Sony NW-A808 and the Creative Zen

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

The Sony NW-A808 is a very stylish MP3 player and has been hailed as a stylish contender to the popular iPod range of players.

It’s not just the looks that this player has though; it also has the specs as well. There are 2gb, 4gb or 8GB of flash memory and it also has video playback capabilities. Something that really makes the NW-A808 stand out against other Sony MP3 players is that it has a healthy battery life and manages to last longer than the iPod nano as well.

With this Sony player being smaller than the nano it is even more pocket friendly and therefore has yet another angle that will make it appeal to more and more people. The only thing that may put people off is the price tag, as £120, £150 and £180 seems quite hefty for 2GB, 4GB and 8GB players respectively.

Another impressive player to come out was the Creative Zen. This is a credit card sized device that plays music, video and also works as a photo viewer and with the stunning 2.5-inch colour display, photos would look great on the screen that supports up to 16.7 million colours.

This player from Creative is the first of their range to support AAC music and unprotected iTunes Plus tracks from the iTunes online store. On top of these formats, the Zen will also play MP3 and WMA tracks as well. All of this means that you can now have up to 4,000 music tracks on this player that you have ripped from CDs via the iTunes software. If music isn’t top of your list, then this is one of the Creative MP3 players that will also play up to 60 hours of music or hold thousands of photos. Also, the player has a slot to hold a SD memory card so you can expand the memory even more.

These are just two models of MP3 players out on the market at the moment and they both offer the user great features, so much so, that the deciding factor may well be based on what’s on the outside.

The NW-A808 stands out against other Sony MP3 players is that it has a healthy battery life and very pocket-friendly dimensions.

If you would prefer media other than music on your player then the Zen is one of the Creative MP3 players that can hold up to 60 hours of video or thousands of photos.

These models are just two out of the many MP3 players that are on offer.

The Truth About Life`s Challenges (Living By Zen)

“The great gate is open, but travelers seek everywhere” Eshin

In the midst of our lives, hungry, thirsty and often weary, there comes a moment when we stop and wonder, “Is this all there is? Is there another way to live my life that will bring the joy and contentment that eludes me?” Caught in the patterns of our lives, each of us has an intuition of something beyond the way we are now living. This something has the power to dispel sorrow and transform our lives into one of wholeness and joy. It has the power to heal division and offer the strength, compassion and refreshment we all desire.

This is what happens as we live from the wisdom within, our true nature, the essence of who we are. Rather than seek to fulfill everyone else`s beliefs and expectations, when we turn within for wisdom and guidance we have a way of seeing things differently. Rather than respond automatically, we are true to ourselves, to our own perception and vision and then have the opportunity arises to look at the world through fresh eyes. As we do this, we can often grow like flowers, planted in the soil of our daily concerns.

This may also be called, living our lives from the inside out, trusting ourselves and our own intuition. As we begin to do this, we develop a new way of knowing and of being in the world. We do not analyze, explain or justify what happens. Rather than try to mold or control our experience, we simply make friends with it, become acquainted, let it instruct us and be our guide.

First Steps

As we embark upon this pathway, there are certain pointers and warnings which are helpful. Some are listed below: As they become part of your daily lives, you will easily and naturally see how your relationships benefit as well.

Pointers and Warnings

Take a deep breath. We are not going anywhere fast. In fact, we are returning – back to our original home. Put down fantasies, hopes, expectations for a moment. Just simply learn to be where you are. Sit still without moving, and take in all that is going on now. Don`t judge it, hate it, push it away. Be with everything, just as it is. Including yourself.

Pointer 1 – Stop Looking For A Quick Fix

A great danger in our lives is looking for a quick fix, believing there are all kinds of wise ones around who have the answers for our lives. That is not the point here. As they say, “Don`t put a head on your head. What`s wrong with your own, anyway?”

Pointer 2 – Give Up Unnecessary Pressure

Most of the time we create all kinds of goals and drive ourselves crazy to reach them. We measure our progress, compare ourselves to others, judge ourselves relentlessly. This is not our way. Here we focus upon each breath, each day, each moment and experience it totally. One complete breath brings the next. This path is made by walking.

Pointer 3 – Go Back To The Beginning

Many are constantly seeking more and more, exploring new territories, ideas, relationships. They then feel they are advancing and gaining ground. However, many rush forward without really knowing where they are going. Once they arrive, they quickly set a new destination and start rushing to it again. Our way is to return to the beginning. We stop, sit down, look within. We remember where we came from, who we are and where we are headed. We also remember to take care of our simple lives as well as the lives of others along the way.

By returning to our original nature, we remember how to sit, breathe, eat, play and re-claim the excitement, joy and adventure we felt as children, but lost along the way.

“The plum tree of my hut, It couldn`t be helped, It bloomed.”

New Beginnings (Zen Steps To Starting Fresh)

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Copyright 2006 Brenda Shoshanna

Along with the joy and excitement of the New Year`s season, a feeling of sadness often exists side by side. This feeling sometimes grows stronger after the New Year itself has passed. During this period we consciously or unconsciously review the year that has gone by, how it`s met our expectations and the ways in which we have developed or grown.

We also become aware of our disappointments, both in others and in ourselves. The New Year itself can seem daunting to some, challenging to others, filled with excitement or with fear. However, it is important to realize that a new year is new. Just as each breath we take is a fresh one, unless we carry the past with us as heavy baggage, unless we cling to old memories and mistakes, we can begin to live this year in a way that is truly refreshing and healing as well. Each day, each moment offers us this opportunity, if we know how to enter it truly. Whatever has happened, or hasn`t happened, however the new year appears to you, there are several steps we all can take in starting a truly new chapter, making a beginning that is fresh and new.

Step 1 – is to realize that in order for our year to be new, we have to be new. No matter how much we may want to hold onto the old, life itself is a series of changes. When we resist change, we resist life itself. Though difficult at times, change brings new growth, values, goals and understanding. As we say good-bye to plans, hopes, and old ways of being, we can open the door to new experience and fulfillment.

Along with the joy of new growth, growing pains can be common. Don`t be afraid of a little sadness or fear. It is natural, to be expected. Welcome it with open arms in the realization that new life is on the way. Allow yourself to feel what you feel. Then let the feeling go and move straight, directly into the present moment. The present moment is always filled with wonder, freshness and endless possibilities.

Step 2 – Go over your past year with fresh eyes. Instead of finding everything wrong that has happened, find everything right that went on. Make a list of the good things that happened to you. Make a list of the ways in which people in your life pleased you, and the ways in which you pleased them as well. Make a list of the things you admire and respect about who you are. (The more you admire and respect yourself, the easier it is to embark and succeed at new goals and dreams). Most of the time we focus upon the negative and in this manner throw ourselves into depression. Change this habit now. By focussing on what went right each day, the year will be truly new.

Step 3 – Give thanks. Each day find five things and people to give thanks for. Write this down. Then, actually call or write to at least one of the people on your list and offer them thanks for who they are or what they`ve done. This is a wonderful way of freeing yourself from feelings of deprivation and resentment most of us walk around with each day. It is also a wonderful way of realizing the enormous support available to you for realizing new dreams and accomplishing goals. The New Year has endless possibilities. You may make resolutions and create many new goals and dreams. However, without a strong, consistent positive focus, in subtle ways we undermine ourselves. Build this new perspective. It`s the best thing you can do for yourself and others all year long.

How to get the Mind of a Zen Buddhist Monk

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Copyright 2006 Mary Desaulniers

It has been 8 weeks since I started Bill Harris` Holosync Awakening Prologue. And I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised by the results. I was not looking for gut-wrenching changes in my personality. After all I am, on the whole, quite even in temperament. Like most folks, I am happy, confident and secure most of the time.

What attracted me to Bill Harris` program initially was the fact that his promises did not carry the usual sales pitch. He did not promise that all your dreams would materialize with the use of his product. Nor did he say that you would become infinitely wealthy or successful or that all your desires would be made manifest. What he did promise was that

a) you would become more happy, more tranquil;

b) you would improve your brain power—increase in learning ability, memory, intuition, creativity and concentration;

c) you would experience remarkable improvement in spiritual and emotional health;

d) you would ( if you follow through with the 12 levels of the program until the end) develop the brain state of a Zen Buddhist monk.

It was this last promise—that I can have the mind and brain state of a Zen Buddhist monk– that really intrigued me. So I ordered the initial program—the Awakening Prologue online.

So far, 8 weeks into the program ( meditating 1 hour a day with Holosync), I have noticed

a)a remarkable ability on my part to focus on my work( writing),

b)increased creativity and productivity,

c)a deep, deep sense of happiness that wells up several times during the course of the day.

But what has been for me the most profound change is the ease with which I seem to enter a meta-consciousness, an “other” me looking at myself and all that happens to me in a detached, witnessing manner. It`s as though I am able to enter an altered state that prevents me from judging or reacting with blind emotions. I am watching my response( whether it be joy, anger, annoyance) as though it were someone else`s , another reality, not mine. And the benefit of this detachment is the ability not to be aroused unnecessarily by circumstance.

Well, you are probably wondering, what is Holosync and how does it work?

In its simplest form, Holosync is meditation through neurotechnology. It is based on the work of Dr. Gerald Oster whose research into the effects of sound waves on brain wave patterns led to his use of sound to create desired electrical patterns in the brain, including those of a Zen Buddhist monk who has been meditating for over 20 years. Studies have shown that these monks have unusually balanced and synchronized whole brains, developed through years of focusing by repeating a prayer or mantra. The repetitive practice of meditation has created new neural pathways in their brains allowing them to experience the ineffable sense of oneness and connectedness so typical of spiritual experiences.

Instead of merely duplicating these brain wave patterns, Harris chose to view the entire Holosync meditation process as evolutionary which means that the brain is pushed by progressively stronger stimulus to develop new structures and new thresholds. And it is this search for stronger stimulus that led Harris to the use of progressively lower frequency carriers to push the brain to higher levels of organization .

Using the analogy of a runner, Harris explains the uniqueness of his meditation process in this way:

“Once the brain finished creating the pathways needed to handle the first set of frequencies we originally gave it, evolution would stop. We would be like a runner who could never increase his run to two, three or more miles.

“In terms of the running analogy I`ve used, lowering the carrier frequency is like adding more miles to your run. On the other hand, the meditative brainwave pattern caused by the beat frequency the brain creates in reconciling the Holosync tones corresponds to how fast you run. Slowing the brain wave from beta to alpha to theta to delta is like running increasingly faster. By allowing us to run faster and farther, carrier frequency allowed us to really push the brain to change.”

The technology behind Holosync is part of a new revolution in neuroscience which sees brain wave entrainment as a means to enhanced brain power, health and longevity. Research now shows that the endorphins released when the brain is exposed to alpha and theta binaural beat patterns enhance many mental functions such as learning and memory. A recent study by Dr. Vincent Giampapa M.D. revealed that placing a listener in the various brain wave patterns using Holosync audio technology dramatically affects three hormones related to longevity and well-being. He found the following changes in levels of melatonin, DHEA and cortisol in 19 users of Holosync listening 4 hours a day over a 3 day period:

a)Over 68% had increases in DHEA ( the hormone that acts as a buffer against stress and aging) levels with an average increase of 43.77%.

b)Cortisol, the stress hormone , was down an average of 46.47%, with positive changes in 68% of the people.

c)Levels of melatonin, the hormone associated with restful sleep, increased an average of 97.77% with positive changes detected in over 73% of the participants.

The entire process of moving through the 12 levels of Holosync would take 7 years. This is really quite encouraging considering that a normal Buddhist monk would take 20 years or more of intense meditation to arrive at this level. For me, the die is cast. I am committed to the entire program; even the 7 year engagement is seductive because it tells me that this is not a simple exercise in magic, but a lifelong commitment to mind and spiritual development.

The Art Of Office Zen

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

This is not the Karate Kid performing the Crane kick down at the beach with Mr. Miyagi, nor is it meditating like a Buddhist monk high in the mountains of Tibet. The word Zen gets thrown around all over the place; think of all the books labeled “The Zen of Blank”. I do not wish to take a heavily used word like Zen and attach it to something that people will take and alter their life, consciousness, or spiritual understandings. No, I am going to use the word Zen how it was meant to be used and apply it to a specific aspect of life that we all deal with on a 9-5 basis, 5 days a week Work.

Across the planet people have all sorts of jobs and some lucky people don`t need them due to financial security. Applying Zen to your job is first applying a simple lighthearted approach to the pressures in life in general. So I am not going to set up rules that must be followed, nor should we look for a certain goal other than a more peaceful work environment.

Office Zen A guide to Peaceful Work

The aim to here is to make your work environment soothing, productive, and peaceful. Now the word Office will apply to the environment that you work in regardless if you are in a literal office or not. If you are in a home office, with desks, bookcases, and all sorts of other office furniture, well that`s your surroundings. If you are pumping gas, flying an airplane, or driving a truck, that`s your office.

One Simple Rule

Simplicity is the first step toward a better working environment. When things are simple, they are easy to accept and understand.
When things get too complicated, that`s when things get stressful and start to invade any peacefulness you had established. So first off, see complex things as simple. Complexity arrives when it is too much for you to handle, you feel out of control and unorganized. It`s the mental anxiousness that looks for what needs to be done, how, when, and why.

Don`t linger over what you should have done or what you should do, but instead think of the now. Make your Office, your own. Find something small that you enjoy doing at work, and focus on that one simple thing. By doing that, it helps set up a foundation of seeing simplicity in even complicated demands. The complexity happens when you try to think of everything at once, instead of focusing on one task at a time. When you focus on one idea at a time it`s digestible, and reduces stress, which in turns makes you happier.

When the mind is relaxed and centered you are more productive.
The Zen of your work environment is a tool that can be used to help focus on one aspect of your everyday life, which in turn makes all the other areas more peaceful.

This idea may seem too simple, and your mind already wants specific things to do, or tasks, but that`s it. It`s a very simple idea and that`s the point. When you can manage to focus on one thought at a time, and do each to the best of your ability, it will transcend through out your life. The most efficient people do this, they are not gifted with some super power, they are able to focus the task to their ability and better understand it.

As simple as it is, people over look it all the time. You can make your environment great or a nightmare depending on you perception of it. If you are a white color worker, your office or cubicle can be groomed they way you want it to keep you happy and relaxed. You may have an overload of emails, memos, and every day routines. The secret to multi tasking in an office atmosphere is to focus on one thing at a time. Having all your attention on one task lets you understand and evaluate it more. The more you understand, the simpler it becomes which reduces complexity and makes everyone much happier.

Lets say you are a blue collar working, granted you most likely are not sitting in a nice cushy ergonomic chair. Still nonetheless, be mindful of things that need to be done, but focus on one thing at a time. You would be surprised how well this works for anything.

The Art of Office Zen is an attempt to reduce the mental noise of complexity that we overload our minds with. All these negative things hurt your chances to be happy at work, home, and in life.
A happy worker is a productive worker, which is a benefit to what you do as well to yourself. Without delving into any spiritual hocus-pocus, we took one simple idea that works for anything.
No matter what you do for a living, keeping things simple wont make living complex work. No rules, or wrong ways about it, everyone is different, but one thing Office Zen can show that we all have in common is to be happy.
